If there is one thing that dominates my summer wardrobe its a pair of white linen trousers. I’ve worn them at work, for parties and weddings, on lazy Sundays, on holiday and on dates. Although the second date with my boyfriend almost led to the breaking of the first rule of wearing white trousers (see below). He turned up in his truck, which was filthy dirty inside as well as out, but then we left without paying the bill, entirely by accident of course – so perhaps it was destined to be a night for breaking the rules?
Anyway, I digress… these trousers are to my summer what jeans are to every other season – which is completely indispensable! They are so easy to wear but I’d recommend following these three simple rules…
1. They have to be well ironed and spotlessly clean.
2. ALWAYS wear well fitting nude underwear. Black, frilly, lacy or ill fitting undies will ruin your look. Quick tip: if you don’t fancy nude briefs (and lets face it they aren’t the most attractive of garments) then try lilac as they are just as invisible under white clothing.
3. Never wear them with trainers or Crocs. Trainers are for the gym, Crocs are for watering the garden.
So, with these things in mind – anything goes! They can be incorporated into almost any trend or styled to suit any occasion.
The nautical trend is a no-brainer when it comes to white trousers. Its the easiest outfit to put together – add a striped top and deck shoes and you’re good to go.
For a Tribal look just add an embellished top like this tunic from Love Label, it has gorgeous detailing and the coral shade really shows off a tan. Team with sandals in a spicy colour and finish with lashing of chunky jewellery. It creates a stunning look for holidays and lunch dates alike.
Going nude? White can break up the colour and stop you looking washed out. This angel sleeve top by Vila is floaty and feminine but the cool, clean lines of the trousers keep it looking sharp and stylish. The Street cleat sole shoes by Dune are a fabulous reinvention of the white stiletto and add a touch of sophistication to this outfit.
The floral trend can be a little daunting if, like me, you are a pattern-phobe. But by keeping the shape simple you may find it easier to wear than you first thought. Shapes don’t come any simpler than this Love Label rose print boob tube. Its perfect for hot summer days and looks fab worn with white.
Below are a few of more suggestions of how to accessorise white trousers for different occasions. My personal favourite is the Wedding outfit, I adore the raspberry red colour of the French Connection top and don’t even get me started on the Lipsy T-bar shoes…
