Black velvet (dress) if you please…

When I was young my mum bought me a beautiful Laura Ashley black velvet dress with a ruffled white collar and a sash. I loved it. Unfortunately, dear Mum just took a picture of me in it and then returned it to the shop. True story.

Anyway, ever since then I’ve needed a black velvet dress to undo the damage of that sad day, and this season it looks like I might be in luck! Velvet is back; just in time for Christmas!

Quality velvet feels and looks expensive so it’s perfect for special occasions. You can get velvet accessories, skirts, tops etc but for me, only a black velvet dress will reconcile those dark memories….

This Fearne Cotton black velvet puff dress is just gorgeous. The taffeta cuffs and skirt add volume to the sophisticated cut of this stylish dress. It’s fitted but not too tight and the neckline allows for an accent necklace, if you so choose. Suits bare legs best but does work with opaque tights (black or coloured). Add black ballerina pumps, or patent platforms would look lush.

This Love label velvet pleat detail dress hits two trends in one. The sun ray cape sleeve detailing adds another texture which makes it seem more expensive than £35, and the deep V back makes it perfect for parties. Team with heels, a simple clutch and gold jewellery before you hit the dance floor.

This other Love Label dress would be perfect for Christmas Day. It’s fashionably demure with full length lace sleeves, lace body and a cute Peter Pan collar. Dress up its vintage look with some key accessoriespearls would be the perfect finishing touch. Add Mary Jane shoes with bare legs for a look that’s seductive but girlie, or opaque tights for a more conservative look.

My conclusion…

Even though it’s the more expensive velvet black dress option (although still very reasonable at £55), I am fairly convinced that I should opt for Very.co.uk’s Fearne Cotton dress. Its simple and classic cut won’t go out of style and I think it will go some way in repairing the memory of the Laura Ashley dress that never was(!).
