When I think of pencil skirts I visually flit between a late 1950s Jackie Kennedy and Maggie Gyllenhaal in Secretary. Jackie, so prim, so proper and always so impeccably turned out and Maggie, looking so prim but acting so improper as the submissive secretary in the film’s exploration of sado masochism in the workplace. So if you are feeling naughty or nice or both and you want an item of clothing that makes you feel fabulous every time you put it on then slip yourself into a pencil skirt. It’s the way it hugs your curves from the waist to knee and sculpts your bottom giving you such a sleek and seductive hourglass shape that makes it one of the sexiest things a woman can wear. And what’s also wonderful is that you can wear a pencil skirt to work without so much as a raised eyebrow from her in Bought Ledger.
A pencil skirt will work well on most body shapes. It’s perfect for the hourglass naturally. If you are a super toned hourglass have a look at this French Connection Fonda Knitted Pencil Skirt. It’s knitted so that makes it totally clingy and body con. Good for girls with flat tummies, pert bottoms and smooth hips. That takes me out then. This style is best avoided if you have a bit of a tummy but if you are happy to wear control pants then go ahead.
For the rest of us check out this South Drape Skirt in grey check. totally wearable and soooo channelling that 1950’s Mad Men vibe. Pair it with a saucy little lilac twinset or tight grey polo neck sweater and a twist of pearls. The gathered fabric over the tummy makes it a winner for apple shaped ladies. Wear a thick elastic belt over the skirt for extra structure around the waist. This will also help straight up and down girls by creating the illusion of a smaller waist.
Not all pencil skirts are made for work, mind. My favourite has to be this beautiful South Leather Pencil Skirt. I see it worn with a retro rock t-shirt like this Fearne Cotton Deer Print T-Shirt, long boyfriend cardigan like this South Supersoft Boyfriend Cardigan, ankle socks, brogues or loafers and nerdy glasses. So CUTE! If you get it in black leather you can explore your wilder side and wear with a black satin bustier, a sheer black shirt and dominatrix shoes or keep it low key Parisian chic and wear with a striped Breton top, scarf and ballet pumps.
For even more Ooh la la go animal print with this South Animal Pencil Skirt. Wear it with an off the shoulder top, thick belt and pointed court shoes. A pencil skirt is so wearable it will stay in your wardrobe until the end of time. It’s the classic item that never ever dates.
