A New Year’s Eve dress is all about the sparkle and the embellishment. But what to wear if you’re not into dresses? I know not all women love a dress so if you don’t like getting your legs out this is the perfect time to invest in a tuxedo suit. This dramatic, slightly androgynous look is all over the catwalks right now and in my eyes there’s nothing sexier than a tux tailored to a woman’s body shape and worn with fitted shirts, dangling braces and two tone brogues. It’s one helluva hot daytime look but we’re looking for a sexy night time way to wear the tux and I’ve got this image in my head for my inspiration.
OMG, is she one sexy suit! And with barely an inch of skin on display too. The designer behind this look was Yves Saint Laurent. He reinvented the men’s suit for women in 1966 and called it ‘Le Smoking.’ It’s still a classic reference point for fashion designers and stylists today. As a stylist it’s always good for me to have a visual on paper or in my head when putting together a look and it’s something you too could try when coming up with a special outfit whether that be for NYE, your birthday or your BF’s wedding.
There are some gorgeous tux suits and separates around right now and I guarantee you this – your tux will be in your wardrobe for years and years to come which means plenty of wears per pound. And I know that’s what I want when I’m spending some major purse on an outfit. French Connection Solo Crepe Jacket is not cheap but the design is beautiful and it will last. I love the skinny lapels and the sharp shoulders. Slightly cheaper and by the same label is this French Connection Noble Storm Jacket with interesting cutaway lapels (very Stella McCartney).
Both jackets go well with skinnies but will look great with wider leg trousers too. South Wide Leg trousers have a lovely 70’s flared silhouette and French Connection Noble Storm Trousers naturally go perfectly with this jacket. The South Teddy Jacket and Fearne Cotton Longline Tuxedo Jacket are ideal for tall girls and will look equally good with skinny trousers like South Tuxedo Trousers, which are slim fitting and have a cute satin trim on the pockets and waistband. South Skinny Satin Pants will add a new dimension to the outfit but beware of all that shiny fabric if your legs are a bit on the chunky side.
Often, tailored jackets and trousers come with the pockets stitched up. My advice is leave them that way. Putting anything in the pockets will ruin the line of the suiting (as well as adding inches to your frame). If you keep them stitched up you can’t be tempted to pop a mini lippy or a wee mobile phone in them. You don’t have to stick to suiting fabrics on your bottom half either. Love Label Luxe Leather Trousers will give your tux look a cool, rock goth edge. If you’ve got a great pair of pins you could even pair the jacket with some South Faux Leather Shorts.
Now, what to wear with your tux? A simple scoop neck t-shirt will always look gorgeous and effortless but as we’re talking NYE, on this occasion I think we want to up the ante. The South Beaded Collar Blouse is so retro cute with it’s contrast beaded collar. Do keep it buttoned up. Ted Baker Darlena Top is a very unexpected top to put with a suit but I think the gold will give your outfit a cool party look. For full on sexiness try a sheer cami like this Love Label Lace Cami Top. The delicate fabric and your delicious skin will contrast beautifully with the covered upness of the suit.
Keep the Christmas sparkle going on with the white/pearlescent sequins in this South Sequin Top. Ramp up the sexiness with killer heels like the Lipsy Stud Strap Sandal and dramatic jewellery like French Connection’s Two Way Torque Necklace. Avoid lots of delicate jewellery – wayyy too fussy for this striking outfit.
A tux is your perfect New Year’s Eve outfit and let me tell you, it’s a look that’ll really stand out amongst all those sparkly dresses.
