Boobs, we’ve all got ‘em but the big question is…how well do we really know them? Are your hooters feeling happy and looking healthy? Have there been any changes since you last copped a feel? Do you even remember the last time you gave them a good honk?
At Very we’re on a mission to get boob aware and we’re teaming up with the breast cancer awareness charity CoppaFeel! in a bid to get as many young peeps as possible checking their boobs at every given opportunity – and its all thanks to an introduction from our very own Fearne Cotton – patron of the CoppaFeel! charity.
CoppaFeel! is a breast cancer awareness charity that is super focused on educating young people (like us!) on the importance of checking their boobs regularly and knowing the signs and symptoms of breast cancer because they know that knowing your boobs could save your life.
Breast Cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK with 47,500 women and 300 men diagnosed each year. Claiming 12,000 lives each year it’s the second most common cause of death from cancer in women in the UK and its the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in women under 35 years. Scary stuff!
Scary stuff that’s got us wanting to do something, get involved, get coppin’ a feel and giving young people the confidence to visit the docs the min we spot something that feels like change.
We’re learning all about boob checking from her royal highness of boob coppin’ Kris and the rest of her team at Boob H.Q including her wing woman and twin sister Maren.
Boob Chief Kris is the founder of CoppaFeel! a HUGE inspiration and one hell of a brave chick with massive amounts of determination! Kris has spent almost 3 years giving it shed loads of beans to spread the boob checking message and we caught up with her to find out a little bit more about Coppafeel and why knowing your boobs could save your life
Q: Kris, what made you get CoppaFeel! off the ground?
Before I was diagnosed I wasn’t checking my boobs, which was pretty foolish. I also wasn’t aware breast cancer could happen to someone my age. Mix that with a ‘you’re too young for breast cancer’ attitude from my GP and you have yourself a very delayed diagnosis. I decided this was nonsense and wanted to ensure this doesn’t happen to anyone else. No one should be told their cancer can’t be treated because it was found late. We should all get to know our boobs, which is why CoppaFeel! was born.
Q: What inspires you to keep spreading the word that checking your boobs could save your life?
Endless determination and a stubborn streak! I have dedicated my life to this now, and what is the point in stopping when we know we’re making a difference — and it also happens to be a lot of fun! (and hard work!) Hearing from young women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer at a treatable stage because they listened to our message, is the best feeling in the world!
Q: What’s the best way to get to know your boobs?
Doing it often! There’s no point in doing it once and never again. The idea is for you to get to know what your boobs look and feel like normally, and how else will you do this if you’re not checking at every given opportunity! Shower time is particularly brilliant for this. And we know you forget, which is why we are more than happy to send you a monthly reminder to your phone! — so there are no more excuses!
Q: How often should we check our boobs?
At least once a month. It is normal for your boobs to change with your monthly cycle, but monitoring what happens during that time is key. Any abnormal activity should be taken to your GP immediately!
Q: What can we do to help you spread the word of CoppaFeel!?
The Very Team will be bringing you regular updates on the happenings of the Boob Squad and keeping you up to date on how we’re getting behind CoppaFeel! to help raise awareness of breast cancer in young peeps! We’ve got loads planned – starting of with a Bikin’ for Boobies (keep posted for details on our pedalling antics!)
We’re off to coppafeel of our boobs and will be running around the Very H.Q. making sure that all of our lovely Very bods are having a good feel too. We’ll have posters popping up everywhere, boob checking guides for all and will be collecting pennies when Team Very take to the road for Bikin’ for Boobies.
Until next time peeps – check your boobs! x
