Best Gossip From Red Hot Empire Film Awards

Empire magazine is the go-to magazine for film fans and so you wouldn’t expect their awards ceremony to have an average turn-out would you? In fact, the turn-out was red hot. Firstly with the female celebrities’ outfits and secondly with the A’list names that flew over from the States for the occasion.

Here are the Top 5 pieces of goss from the glamorous do in London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.

(1)    Sarah Harding

The former Girls Aloud singer is weeks away from launching her first solo album since Girls Aloud split. She’s already done one solo gig at a charity party at Kensington Palace and talked about her new plans on ITV show Lorraine. The music, which she’s written in conjunction with her DJ boyfriend Mark Foster, is going to be a bit more mature than the Girl Aloud songs. Sarah, lovely in a long red dress, said: ‘I love pop, but with an edge so that’s what I’d say my music is. And quite controversial. My songs are very confessional and honest. You have to be able to relate to what you’re singing otherwise you’re just a mannequin.’

(2)    Kate Beckinsale

The 40 year old star became famous in Underworld horror movies but she looked angelic at the awards in a floor length dark red dress. I loved the cut outs at the side, giving her that classic hourglass physique. The goss about Kate is that she’s becoming a mentor to British model Cara Delevigne. The two ladies are about to star together in a film called The Face of An Angel and Kate’s been giving Cara acting advice.

(3)    Tom Cruise

Fans of the 80s movie Top Gun will be excited to hear that Mr Cruise, who posed next to a giant front cover of Empire (he’s not THAT short) hinted there may well be a Top Gun 2. Looking suave in his suit and with a twinkle in his eye, Tom said: ‘It’s a matter of when things come together. Sometimes films that you have worked on for many, many years…

“I have had films that I have worked on for years and years and finally the right piece has come together and you feel that it’s going to be something that is exciting.’

(4)    Margot Robbie

The About Time and Wolf of Wall Street actress is one of the big breakthrough actresses of the year. I never noticed her before 2013 and in that year she’s barely stopped working. How does the lady in red deal with the stress? Margot said the secret is eating healthy and exercise to make sure she has a positive attitude. Her favourite workout is an ballet studio in LA called Ballet Bodies, where gym bunnies use pilates machines to mimick the movements of ballet dancers. Rosie Huntingdon Whiteley has previously posted selfies of herself on Instagram of her at the studio. Ballet is becoming a popular fitness craze again.

(5)    Arnold Schwarzeneger

Arnie hinted he would be leaving movies when he got out of politics but he’s about to go back to the big screen in an action movie called Sabotage. But there’s a twist…it has not got well received in early previews by the critics. Arnie is a cop trying to track down missing money after a drugs bust and apparently it’s a rip-roaring chase without a decent storyline. It’s released in the UK on 7 May, and with all this controversy I have to admit I’ll be watching it and judging Arnie’s performance for myself. It’s the Terminator…it’d be rude not to!

And the winners are:

Best Male Newcomer – Aidan Turner

Best Female Newcomer – Margot Robbie

Best Horror – The Conjuring

Best Comedy – Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa

Best Thriller – The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy – The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug

Best Supporting Actor – Michael Fassbender

Best Supporting Actress – Sally Hawkins

Best British Film – The World’s End

Best Actress – Emma Thompson

Best Actor – James McAvoy

Best Director – Alfonso Cuaron

Best Film – Gravity

Ladies Day: Make Sure You’re Off To The Races In Style

OK, so your ticket is bought, day booked off and now you need the perfect outfit for Ladies Day.

Take a look at some of my top picks and outfit odds – you don’t want to be the nap of the day!

Monochrome is a sure thing this Ladies Day with the lovelies of Liverpool working the chalkboard trend of the summer.

Around last season, monochrome has been reworked with colour blocks and frills for an occasion wardrobe investment.

When showcasing your mod monochrome remember to:

  • Keep it fun and flamboyant with frills
  • Or understatedly chic with bold, colour block panels

Y.A.S have gone for frills with their contemporary take on monochrome, while AX Paris have gone for a stand out checkerboard pattern for bold beauties.

Lace has become a staple of Ladies Day, and all other race meetings, around the country. It’s a safe bet that you’ll look the part in lace – however remember to:

  • Keep it simple
  • Keep it ladylike
  • Keep the sleeves capped or long

Amy Childs has the right idea when it comes to lace dresses – she keeps it simple in strong colours, ladylike in a pencil cut and the sleeves flattering. However, the bodycon fit adds a little oomph to your look!

These dresses are from her Georgia range, but check out her Lexie and Sadie collections too for a little lush lace.

OK so jumpsuits make a cute alternative to the little black dress on nights out, but they’re not seen as the in thing at the races. However, as long as you remember to:

  • Keep it glam
  • Keep it fitted

You’ll win over the crowds this Ladies Day! Try out one of our jumpsuits from Little Mistress or Lipsy’s Kardashian Kollection to create a smart chic retro revival of your own or for a more sports luxe meets glam number go for Forever Unique’s Stephie jumpsuit.

And don’t forget to have fun accessorising with a cropped tailored blazer, fascinator and heels!

Now I know what you’re thinking – “Pastels are a huge hit on Ladies Day!” And you’re right, pastels make a come back season after season and look picture perfect if done right. However, if you get pastels wrong you get them very wrong, which is why I’m hedging my bets on them.

Make sure you keep your pastels perfect by:

  • Mixing up the colours – dress and accessories do not need to be coordinated to the max
  • Avoid frills – you risk looking like a small child at a birthday party
  • Play it safe with your underwear – that’s right, you don’t want a VPL on the day and it’s difficult to hide a white, black or nude bra

Take a look at our fun pastel dresses from Little Mistress’ grown up take on the trend and Definitions cute, girly addition to Amy Childs’ vintage rework.

From prom to maxis, lace to monochrome, we have it all for you here so what are you waiting for? Piece together your Ladies Day outfit, fascinators, clutches, heels and all and make sure your outfit is a sure thing!

Love Laura x

Amanda Holden, Simon Cowell and The X Factor Stars Attend I Can’t Sing Show

Move over Matilda and laters Les Miserables – there’s a new musical in London town and the celebs were out in force for its press night. This is because the storyline of I Can’t  Sing is based on the story of The X Factor TV show phenomenon and how it helps members of the public become stars. And talking of stars, anyone remotely connected with X Factor creator Simon Cowell attended the first night,  like Amanda Holden (above) who looked sensational in a white shorts and a white blazer. I never knew she had such amazing legs!

As well as Amanda, there was Britain’s Got Talent judge David Walliams, Cowell’s BFF Sinitta, Xtra Factor presenter Caroline Flack, previous contestants Matt Cardle and Union J and the main lady of the night – Cowell’s baby mama Lauren Silverman. She gave birth just six months ago but it seems like she’s definitely lost her baby weight as she looked super slim in a black dress. Lauren is one yummy mummy…just like Myleene Klass, also in black, who found fame on another of Cowell’s shows, Pop Idol.

There have been rumours that Lauren Silverman was a bit of an ice queen but she seemed really happy to pose by Cowell’s side and support her man on his big opening night. Also, contrary to reports that Lauren and Sinitta don’t get on, they were chatting to each other during the interval. Cowell must have told the two women in his life to ‘play nice’. How civilised!

So what’s the musical actually like you may ask? It tells the story of Chenice (Cynthia Erivo) and Max (Alan Morrissey), two lovesick twenty-somethings who enter The X Factor.  Chenice is inspired to by the death of her Grandad and Max who ‘just wants to sing his songs’. It’s obviously very tongue-in-cheek, with Simon (Nigel Harman), Louis (Ashley Knight) and Jordie (Victoria Elliot) as the judges. You can pretty much guess how it all ends as soon as it starts, but it’s a fun journey. The Jordie character, which is based on Cheryl Cole because she’s a Geordie, is not particularly flattering as she’s a bit of an airhead, which may be why Cheryl was one of the only few of Cowell’s friends to miss the opening night. Poor love!

The songs are very catchy, including one called Please Simon, which may reverberate round your head on your journey home afterwards. Yes, its that catchy! If you like the X Factor then it’s a must-watch.

Make her feel at home on Mother's Day

Make her feel at home on Mother’s Day

Buying a Mother’s Day present is difficult. You want to get her something she actually wants and, at the same time, you want to show her how much you love her by demonstrating a bit of thought and not just reaching for the gift vouchers. So far so good, but then your sister tells you she’s already bought that high-end night cream your mum adores, and your brother has picked up that handbag she had her eye on. You got her jewellery at Christmas and you don’t want to get her chocolates as she’s on a diet. What to do?

Never fear! I have a few great gift ideas that she’ll absolutely love and will be able to put out around the home to admire for a long time to come – and, naturally, to show off to guests and say how it was a gift from wonderful you!

Candles – Candles make for beautiful gifts, whether scented Yankee Candles that evoke memories of fun times you’ve spent together, or a gorgeous candle holder that she can keep on display, she’s sure to love it.

Photos – If you have access to some lovely family snaps then a photo frame can be a beautiful gift. Pre-fill it with childhood pics, or photos from a family event and watch it become her new favourite gift.

Home accessories – If your mum is anything like mine then she loves doing up her home, so why not get her a lovely piece of wall art or a fabulous ornament for that room she’s just decorated? She’ll be made up and it really shows some thought.

Flowers – Yes, I know it’s cliche but receiving flowers is lovely. Even better is when someone gives you a beautiful vase to put them in. Along with the bouquet give her a green glass vase that’s right on-trend this season and she’ll be able to use it every time she gets a bunch!

So try it out, forget the toiletries and the chocs this year and get your mum something beautiful for her home that’s just a little bit creative!

LUMEA-HEADING

We’re Shedding the Light on Hair Removal!

***Competition now closed – Thank you for entering*** Arghhh do you dread the pain and cost of those pricey salon treatments to get rid of that unwanted hair? Well now you don’t need to!  Thanks to the Philips Lumea Precision Plus IPL hair removal system you can have pain free hair removal from the comfort of your own home.

The Philips Lumea IPL hair removal system works wonders to prevent the reappearance of hair on the face as well as the body. Gentle pulses of light, applied regularly, keep skin smooth so you feel silky-smooth every day! = A win/win situation.

So your probably thinking what is IPL & how does it work?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a light based hair removal technology derived from professional beauty salons. It is a treatment in which gentle pulses of light are applied to the hair root.

The light is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair, and converted to light energy. This light energy then travels down to the hair root, stimulating the hair follicle to go into its resting phase.  As a result, the hair falls out naturally and regrowth is prevented, leaving you with long lasting silky-smooth skin.  Neither professional nor at home light-based hair removal treatments can deliver permanent hair removal, but can permanently reduce hair. Ongoing treatment is required to ensure you remain hair-free every day.

Philips has worked with leading dermatologists and performed clinical tests with over 2,000 women to adapt IPL technology for safe and effective home use.  Philips Lumea devices have been available since 2010, with thousands of women now enjoying the benefits of easy, at-home IPL treatment.

Philips Lumea:

The Philips Lumea range is safe to use even on sensitive skin and contains both corded and cordless models to choose depending on your needs.

There are no replacement parts or messy gels to buy with Lumea so there will be no hidden costs in the future.  All Lumea devices can be used on body hair, including underarms, bikini line and legs.  Lumea Precision Plus also has a special facial attachment with an extra UV filter that protects the more sensitive facial skin so this is the best option if you want to treat any facial hair.

So what’s the plan of attack you say?

  1. Shave the area/s you want to treat.  This is to  make sure that the light energy is channelled through to the hair root to put it into its resting phase. This is only necessary before the first 4-5 sessions, when you still experience some hair regrowth.  Do not wax or epilate as this removes the hair root.
  2. Select the correct light intensity (from 1-5) for your skin tone at the time of treatment. This will make sure you have gentle but effective results, while avoiding redness.
  3. Place the device at a 90° angle to dry, clean skin. When the ‘ready to flash’ light appears, you can release a flash. Move the flash window to the next area and repeat the action, ensuring there is some overlap to avoid missing any hairs, until you have covered the entire area you want to treat.  An internal optical filter ensures no UV light reaches the skin.
  4. You can shave in-between treatments during the initial treatment period (8-12 weeks).
  5. Follow steps 1-3 every two weeks for 8-12 weeks.  After this time you should be seeing over 80% hair reduction.
  6. Once you have finished the initial treatment period, then simply treat the area every 4-6 weeks, or as often as needed based on your hair growth pattern, to ensure no re-growth occurs.
  7. Enjoy the freedom of being hair-free every day!

Celebrity Style Steal: Rita Ora’s Hot Right Now Tracksuit

Rita Ora is one of those rare few people that looks just as gorgeous in casual clothes as she does glammed up for an awards ceremony or on stage. With Jay-Z as her mentor, Calvin Harris as her boyfriend and Cara Delevigne as her BFF, Rita is one of the most popular stars in pop. I think it must be due to the fact that she keeps her own style rather than trying to follow anyone else’s trend. She’s a strong character and because of that people gravitate towards her because she’s confident in her own skin – a rare quality in the insecure world of celebrities.

She’s popular all around the world so it’s great to see her flying the flag for Britain wherever she goes. One of the best outfits I’ve seen her in recently is an Adidas tracksuit, which she wore to a meeting in West Hollywood. I then discovered you can get her exact top and exact trainers at Very – the Adidas Originals firebird floral print tracksuit and the Adidas Originals honey stripes mid-plimoslls

Rita showed that you can never have too many florals. Just because you’re wearing a floral top, it doesn’t mean you have to wear plain trousers. That would be a shame given the amount of amazing brights at Very. Adidas sell some lovely floral leggings and I adore these Dr Martens Becket canvas floral boots as well.

And if you truly want to look like Rita, you need to check out the Rimmel make-up at Vey. Rita is a poster girl for Rimmel alongside Kate Moss. The nail varnish has her face on – how pretty are these Rita Ora nail varnish bottles?

Spring is on it’s way so it’s never been a better time to get into the floral trend. Are you ready for a fresh new start in your attitude to colour and how much you can wear at once?

Jessica Ennis-Hill Shows Us The Adidas ClimaChill Range

It’s not easy finding motivation to go to the gym but Adidas have something to help us – new clothes that will keep us cool both in looks and feel. The new range is called ClimaChill because of the way it’s designed to regulate the body temperature and it will be available at Very on the 1st of April, but I was invited to get an exclusive preview of the range at an event in central London. I took a few photos so you can see what bright new gear to expect!

Sometimes you might pick t-shirts or leggings purely because of the colour – I know I am guilty of this – but after learning about these new Adidas ClimaChill items, I realised it’s just as important to question what fabric your exercise clothes are made from. Adidas has used SubZero yarn, a revolutionary flat yarn containing titantium metal, to draw heat away from the body faster than traditional round yarns. Gold medal winning Olympic athlete Jessica Ennis Hill knows just how important it is to keep body temperature low so it can function at it’s best and she told me she’s been training in these ClimaChill items already. If it’s good enough for Jess, it tells me something…

Jessica is six months pregnant but she is determined to keep in shape and she told me she’s been running and doing light exercises under the guidance of her coaches to ensure she can get back to training as quickly as possible after giving birth. ‘I’m not used to being this big,’ she confessed to me. ‘Some people wouldn’t think I was huge but I’m used to having a six pack so this is weird for me.’ I thought she looked absolutely tiny, mainly because her legs are still lean from running. ‘The Adidas products really do help keep me cool and my bump feels supported which means I can train longer,’ she added. It was great to see that Jessica seemed truly happy about becoming a mum, telling me: ‘I’m a bit scared but I’m excited too. These next three months are going to feel like forever as I wait for my baby to arrive.’ Bless!

The range isn’t just for female athletes and sports fans. David Beckham is one of the male ambassadors as the temperature regulating fabric is just as useful on the football pitch as it is on the running field or any other event where you’re likely to sweat a lot.

And it’s not just the yarn that makes these clothes different from anything else on the market. Adidas are the first brand to use Aluminium cooling spheres, dotted around the warmest parts of the body. Yes, the metal aluminium…so don’t wear it if you’re going through an airline metal detector! You’ll find these aluminium dots on the back of the neck as this is one of the areas that overheats first.

However, don’t worry about it making the t-shirt heavy. When you wear it it’s light and comfortable and I found the fabric really soft, which may have had something to do with the flat yarn. It’s only when you run in it that it does it’s job so basically your t-shirt is taking some of the work away from your body. It cools you down so your body doesn’t have to and can focus on making you perform better.

I’m definitely not an elite athlete but if this ClimaChill range makes it easier for me in the gym then it sounds like a good idea to me. The fact that the gorgeous David Beckham and the lovely Jessica Ennis Hill are backing the brand is the cherry on the cake…or should that be the wheatgrass shot in the protein shake?

blondie

Style Inspiration – Debbie Harry

If ever there was a lady who women want to be and men want to be with it’s Ms. Harry. Her tough attitude and fearless style have elevated to her to Punk Royalty and goddess-like genius – so much so that artists like Courtney Love are still paying homage to this day. She’s like a cool modern day Marilyn Monroe with extra attitude. Yep, we’re girl-crushing.

To get a good DH look going we’d suggest starting with double denim, a vintage band tee, a white vest top, some animal print and anything asymmetrical – but the best way to educate yourself is to see her in action.

With that in mind we’ve put together a playlist of our favourite Blondie tracks (such a tough job) with a little retrospective on what she was wearing at the time – hopefully it’ll inspire you to go away and have your own little DH moment. All together now “oooooooh, your hair is beautiful …”

Never afraid to go space age, the promo for this new-wave spaghetti western anthem features Debbie in a canary yellow tee and a post-apocalyptic bin-bag suit. Probably not a look to attempt down the local shop – but you can still channel the look with one of these yellow tops.

Boy meets girl is still a theme running through this season, so it should be easy to knock-together an androgynous look that nods to Debbie’s suit at this time. Take it next level with a black shirt and white tie if you’re confident enough to pull it off.

“I want to tell you something you’ve known all along” – yes, black is always the new black, the outfit here is a close-fitting black tank worn with black trousers, a slick of vampy red lippy and some seriously smoky eyes.

There was a definite penchant for a figure-fitting bold dress around this time, with bright hues, stripes, and lots and lots of eye-makeup. You can emulate the look with this striped dress .

I have to admit, if my hair could take any more stress I would LOVE the platinum bob in this promo, amazing. Anyway this look is all about the chic and simple little dress worn with black tights and the ubiquitous smoky eye. This frill bodycon from Love Label is a good place to start.

Only Debbie H can pull off white heels with tights and a playsuit, but if you’re not the kinda girl who wants to rock a look like that just swap the shoes for ankle boots – this look is super-cute and we happen to have a few playsuits that’ll fit the bill. Just belt it up, keep lips peachy and hair mussed up.

With lace being pretty-much-everywhere right now, this look should be easy to put together – black lace over a black sleeveless top and black shorts – simples. The stroke of genius lies in the smattering of delicate gold necklaces and bangles. If you’re not ready for shorts yet, this lace insert black jumpsuit from Fearne Cotton is a more spring friendly option.

So there you have it – DIY Debbie Harry, I hope you like – there’ll be more vintage vinyl inspiration coming soon x

Vanessa White at VERY VIP: Spring/Summer 2014

The Very.co.uk Spring/Summer 2014 collection event on March 19th at the Vinyl Factory, Soho was of course incredible to witness with a vast array of new season must haves on display along with beauty stations from Nails Inc and Babyliss. Many influential people from digital and print media turned up to view the collection along with fashion bloggers who were very much ready for a spot of VIP pampering.

The collections included Love Label and Definitions which showcased a wide variety of daring brights, pastels hues and edgy matching sets, which guests were allowed to try on and validate via a special photo-shoot!

Celebrities who attended included MTV presenter Lilah Parsons, model Vogue Williams and of course The Saturdays member Vanessa White. She looked absolutely stunning dressed from head to toe in Very’s Love Label. The bold pink print matching set on her looked like perfection and she was thrilled to be wearing it. ‘If you’d asked me a few years ago if I’d wear a matching set I’d probably have said no but it’s so massive at the moment! Everyone is wearing them’, Vanessa said.

Her love for denim didn’t go unnoticed. ‘I don’t know where I’d be without denim’, said Vanessa. ‘It’s the ultimate style staple so I’m very excited it was so prominent on the catwalks!’ In reference to the upcoming season, Vanessa was on point with her denim styling forecast. ‘I tend to stick to darker denim shades but these faded blues from Very are really cool and I LIVE in shorts in summer so the coral ones are great’

The upcoming summer season had Vanessa in high spirits as she unveiled more of her beachy styling tips. ‘I’m really into form fitting clothes but I also love wearing more flowy looser tops that I can cinch in at the waist’. Perfect for that feminine silhouette!

Having her images splashed across media outlets in the past couple of years, we all know she loves to experiment with her style. ‘The white shorts suit from Very is cool because it’s not too out there but if you’re going to do matching prints I say go wild with it.’ Fashion today is all about being brave and Vanessa hits the nails on the head with this, urging other girls to take a risk.

Other favourites of hers in the collection included the classic blazer and the jumpsuits. ‘How great would this look with a pair of heels?’ she gushed eyeing up the coveted piece. An instant outfit choice for many of my upcoming Summer evening parties. Thanks Vanessa!

It was great to see someone talk to eloquently about fashion. When asked about image portrayal as part of one of Britain’s most successful girl bands she stated, ‘obviously when we’re by ourselves we have your own style but together we work with a stylist to find what’s right for us’. With so many more pieces to choose from, she eventually concluded, the collection is absolutely gorgeous. I want everything!’ With that, she warmly mingled with others, greeting everyone and took as many pictures as possible.

The March collection for Very which includes Fearne Cotton’s range along with Love Label and Definitions landed on-line on 20th March. Time to shop!
