Move over Matilda and laters Les Miserables – there’s a new musical in London town and the celebs were out in force for its press night. This is because the storyline of I Can’t Sing is based on the story of The X Factor TV show phenomenon and how it helps members of the public become stars. And talking of stars, anyone remotely connected with X Factor creator Simon Cowell attended the first night, like Amanda Holden (above) who looked sensational in a white shorts and a white blazer. I never knew she had such amazing legs!
As well as Amanda, there was Britain’s Got Talent judge David Walliams, Cowell’s BFF Sinitta, Xtra Factor presenter Caroline Flack, previous contestants Matt Cardle and Union J and the main lady of the night – Cowell’s baby mama Lauren Silverman. She gave birth just six months ago but it seems like she’s definitely lost her baby weight as she looked super slim in a black dress. Lauren is one yummy mummy…just like Myleene Klass, also in black, who found fame on another of Cowell’s shows, Pop Idol.
There have been rumours that Lauren Silverman was a bit of an ice queen but she seemed really happy to pose by Cowell’s side and support her man on his big opening night. Also, contrary to reports that Lauren and Sinitta don’t get on, they were chatting to each other during the interval. Cowell must have told the two women in his life to ‘play nice’. How civilised!
So what’s the musical actually like you may ask? It tells the story of Chenice (Cynthia Erivo) and Max (Alan Morrissey), two lovesick twenty-somethings who enter The X Factor. Chenice is inspired to by the death of her Grandad and Max who ‘just wants to sing his songs’. It’s obviously very tongue-in-cheek, with Simon (Nigel Harman), Louis (Ashley Knight) and Jordie (Victoria Elliot) as the judges. You can pretty much guess how it all ends as soon as it starts, but it’s a fun journey. The Jordie character, which is based on Cheryl Cole because she’s a Geordie, is not particularly flattering as she’s a bit of an airhead, which may be why Cheryl was one of the only few of Cowell’s friends to miss the opening night. Poor love!
The songs are very catchy, including one called Please Simon, which may reverberate round your head on your journey home afterwards. Yes, its that catchy! If you like the X Factor then it’s a must-watch.
