IPL: Made Easy With Our Q&A

Now we’ve told you exactly how to use the Philips Lumea, we’re sure you may have a few questions…

Never fear we have all the FAQ’s right here for you to help put your mind at ease.

Are there any skin tones or hair colours that are not suitable for IPL treatment?

IPL treatment is not effective on red hair, white/grey hair or light blonde hair. Nor is it suitable for very dark skin, as it can cause skin damage, such as burns, blisters or discoloration. You can check in the table below if Lumea is suitable for your hair colour and skin tone.

Does IPL destroy the hair follicle/will I be permanently hair-free?

No, unfortunately not. If you stop using Lumea, the hair follicle will recover and hair will grow once again. Neither professional nor at home light-based hair removal treatments can deliver permanent hair removal. Due to the hair growth cycle, light-based treatments are usually done in a series of sessions. Hairs that may have been dormant during your previous treatment may now be in the growth phase. With both professional and at-home treatments, hairs usually reappear after time, typically with a reduced amount or finer version if treatment stops.

Maintenance sessions once or twice a year are often recommended with professional treatments. Philips Lumea uses a lower intensity than the professional treatments so it is safe for you to use at home, but using it more regularly gives you breakthrough results and ensures you can remain hair-free all the time.

Is it necessary to keep using the appliance every 2 weeks, once I am smooth?

Yes, it is if you want to keep that smooth and silky skin especially for the bikini area and underarms. For legs, the treatment interval is 4 weeks due to the different growth cycle of the hair. If the treatment is interrupted, the hair root will re-activate and a new hair will start to grow back.

What happens if I use Philips Lumea more often – will I see better/quicker results?

No – Patience is a virtue! Using your Philips Lumea more often than recommended will not speed up the hair removal process. You should avoid treating the same area multiple times in one session since this will not improve the efficacy – it only increases the risk of skin irritations.

How do I look after my Philips Lumea? …. Obviously great!

It’s crucial to clean the window of the appliance with the cloth supplied, after every treatment. This is to remove residue like hair or dirt, which can build from the flashing process and may cause an increased heat sensation or skin reactions, if left uncleaned. Regular cleaning helps to ensure optimal results and a long life for the appliance.
