Style Inspiration – Debbie Harry

If ever there was a lady who women want to be and men want to be with it’s Ms. Harry. Her tough attitude and fearless style have elevated to her to Punk Royalty and goddess-like genius – so much so that artists like Courtney Love are still paying homage to this day. She’s like a cool modern day Marilyn Monroe with extra attitude. Yep, we’re girl-crushing.

To get a good DH look going we’d suggest starting with double denim, a vintage band tee, a white vest top, some animal print and anything asymmetrical – but the best way to educate yourself is to see her in action.

With that in mind we’ve put together a playlist of our favourite Blondie tracks (such a tough job) with a little retrospective on what she was wearing at the time – hopefully it’ll inspire you to go away and have your own little DH moment. All together now “oooooooh, your hair is beautiful …”

Never afraid to go space age, the promo for this new-wave spaghetti western anthem features Debbie in a canary yellow tee and a post-apocalyptic bin-bag suit. Probably not a look to attempt down the local shop – but you can still channel the look with one of these yellow tops.

Boy meets girl is still a theme running through this season, so it should be easy to knock-together an androgynous look that nods to Debbie’s suit at this time. Take it next level with a black shirt and white tie if you’re confident enough to pull it off.

“I want to tell you something you’ve known all along” – yes, black is always the new black, the outfit here is a close-fitting black tank worn with black trousers, a slick of vampy red lippy and some seriously smoky eyes.

There was a definite penchant for a figure-fitting bold dress around this time, with bright hues, stripes, and lots and lots of eye-makeup. You can emulate the look with this striped dress .

I have to admit, if my hair could take any more stress I would LOVE the platinum bob in this promo, amazing. Anyway this look is all about the chic and simple little dress worn with black tights and the ubiquitous smoky eye. This frill bodycon from Love Label is a good place to start.

Only Debbie H can pull off white heels with tights and a playsuit, but if you’re not the kinda girl who wants to rock a look like that just swap the shoes for ankle boots – this look is super-cute and we happen to have a few playsuits that’ll fit the bill. Just belt it up, keep lips peachy and hair mussed up.

With lace being pretty-much-everywhere right now, this look should be easy to put together – black lace over a black sleeveless top and black shorts – simples. The stroke of genius lies in the smattering of delicate gold necklaces and bangles. If you’re not ready for shorts yet, this lace insert black jumpsuit from Fearne Cotton is a more spring friendly option.

So there you have it – DIY Debbie Harry, I hope you like – there’ll be more vintage vinyl inspiration coming soon x
