Cover Girl #verywinteredit

The Indian summer finally drew to a close earlier this week and since we’ve been experiencing a chillier climate, complete with blustery breezes and rainy downpours. Rather than holing ourselves up indoors, hiding under our blankets for self prescribed duvet days we’ve began making lists of ‘Beat the Blues’ fashion finds for our next payday purchase.

That’s right, when one season draws to a close there’s no greater pleasure to be had than mapping out your new season style. Now we don’t know about you, but we reckon Autumn Winter is the best season to dress for, all those soft, sumptuous layers, nubby knits and the fat free fashion icing on the cake – the cosy coats.
Here at Very we’ve invested in the most noteworthy outerwear styles of the season from fun faux fur to grunge-girl bikers and everything in between. Here we (Gemma and I) talk you through the coolest cover ups we’ve got to keep you warm this winter, why they’re relevant and what to wear them with.

Swinging Sixties
.
.
This season saw fashion houses around the world take a nostalgic look back through the archives in search of inspiration for their AW 14 collections. With Valentino, Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent and Carven all channelling swinging sixties style we look set for Youthquake part II.

SIXTIES BLOG
.
For our sixties inspired cover ups we’ve lined up this fun faux fur coat from Love Label. In a nubby knit it offers texture and cuddle-me-quick appeal to your looks, while the oversized silhouette and collar lends retro undertones to your style. In winter white its perfect for adding a chic top coat to your cold weather clothing. We’re playing up its vintage vibes by pairing it with A line minis, high neck knitwear and fashion flats for a less than subtle nod to mod.
.
The second piece that we love is this powder blue dolly coat, also from Love Label. Its A-line silhouette is synonymous with the ’60s, while its pastel palette is oh-so of-the-moment for a cool style clash. The faux fur princess collar lends a prim trim, plush texture and ensures you’re cocooned from the cold. We’ll be pairing it with the South knitted skirt and sweater suit (Céline anyone?) and patent block heel boots. Finish your look with a nude lip and exaggerated lashes for doe eyed, retro-inspired beauty.
.
If you’re after something that’s after dark appropriate, a piece with a whole lot of attitude, we guarantee you’ll get spotted in this leopard print faux fur by South (also available in black). It’s got rock ‘n’ roll appeal with a feline twist. Wear this furry animal print coat with an understated black turtle neck, an A-line leather mini and feline liquid liner flicks for sixties sexpot style.

Masculine Tailoring
.
Outerwear that looks like it’s been borrowed from your boyfriend is seriously cool. As seen at Christopher Kane, think oversized silhouettes, sleek tailoring and a crisp finish.

While the look is borrowed-from-the-boys it’s important not to look like you’ve rolled around covered in sticky tape in your man’s wardrobe. Think ‘it was cold and a gentleman lent me his coat’. Temper hard, masculine lines with feminine detail . Show some skin with pushed up sleeves for fairer sex appeal and pair loose, boyish coats with skinny silhouettes, figure hugging dresses and overtly feminine heels for a girl-meets-boy fashion fix. Oversized grid prints lend a your outerwear a modern monochrome finish, while tartan checks offer heritage-inspired style.

Luxe Grunge

Luxe-Grunge

Originally associated with rebellious teens, this look is a grown-up take on 90s grunge. The trend cleverly clashes tough pieces with opulent fabrics in a surprisingly seamless way – think plaid patterns with practical parkas all teamed with sumptuous fur, luxurious leather and chunky cleated boots. A fusion of functionality and fashion where glamour meets grunge, it’s much more wearable for the style conscious.

An accessible way to add a touch of attitude to your outfit is this bad gal biker jacket. This season’s update sees the classic biker in a longer length bringing a sleek shape to oversized chunky knits or tees. Those who shy from baggy tops or jeans out of fear of burying the body and losing their feminine physique can opt for this slinky alternative – the fitted design will perfectly balance out the grungy slouchy style. Layer it under a shaggy fur gilet to soften the edge.

Channel Clueless and choose this chic cape that comes in classic red checks. Perfect for petite girls and flattering the figure, the tie belt pulls in the draped silhouette, while the short sleeves and collar allow you to play with layering. Wear it with black skinny jeans, wet-look leggings or leather trousers for a streamlined finish.

The ubiquitous utility jacket is given an indulgent spin with a lavish fur hood and lining. Sure to see you rank top marks with the fashion force, it adds doses of drama to a functional coat. Wear it open over a metallic cami and leather pencil skirt and grab a clutch bag for a polished, prim and proper look with a grunge twist.

Evening Glamour

Evening-Glam

Throw a classy coat over your pretty evening dress and elegantly embrace the bitter wintry weather. A sensible and stylish way to wrap up as the temperature drops, these stunning cover-ups will add a sophisticated spin to your going out glad rags.

Ever since Burberry sent Cara, Suki and Jourdan down the catwalk in their beautiful blanket coats, we can’t wait to snuggle and swaddle up in style too. The cold season’s answer to the popular kimono, we love how it can be flung over our shoulders for ease and effortless chic – perfect for those days when you can barely drag yourself out from under your duvet. Drape it loosely over a delicate dress for a whimsical winter affair. This version comes in traditional tartan with a cute fur collar and nods to the elite English Heritage look.

Show off your fashion finesse by pairing this fabulous fur coat with slinky leather pants. Or go Hollywood vintage glam and team with show-stopping sequins or lace. Amp up this sparkly and sultry number with this rocky leather biker. With its dramatic and decadent fur trim collar, it will lend a touch of 1920s splendour.
