There’s nothing better than a fun, heartwarming Christmas film to get you in the mood for the big day, so if you’ve not watched one yet this December, you’re missing out! So far I’ve watched The Holiday, Elf and A Christmas Story, I have some serious plans in place for a yuletide movie marathon of epic proportions this weekend – and I’m feeling about as festive as you can get!
There’s no right or wrong when it comes to Christmas movies. Whether you love the cheesiness of Miracle on 34th Street, the creepiness of Black Christmas or the wackiness of Nativity, there’s a festive favourite for everyone. With that in mind, I decided to investigate around Very HQ to check out what our own top picks are.
As you can see, we’re a pretty diverse bunch. Marc’s choice of The Muppet Christmas Carol was a popular one – who doesn’t love singing along with Kermit?! – while Gemma picked The Snowman, going for an absolute classic, as did Aimee with It’s A Wonderful Life. Lisa, Sara and Kate all went down the comedy route with National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Elf and Jingle All The Way respectively, while Mark went offbeat with Bad Santa.
I love all of these films and don’t disagree with a single choice. But my own festive fave? The one I save to watch every year on Christmas Eve? It’s got to be Die Hard.
It’s perhaps not a Christmas film in the most traditional sense, but think about it. A cop goes to a corporate party on Christmas Eve to reconcile with his estranged wife and spend Christmas with his kids. Once there, the building is attacked by terrorists and the cop has to fight his way out, walk barefoot over broken glass and deal in witty repartee with Alan Rickman, all to win his wife back and spend Christmas with his family. It’s the ultimate Christmas movie!
Plus it has the line ‘Now I have a machine gun. Ho. Ho. Ho.’
