The decade that style forgot (allegedly, and unfairly) never seems to be far from designer’s minds, every few years a new resurgence occurs and we’re singing to the tune of ‘let’s go round again’! This season’s offering harks back to the best of the 70s boho icons with flares, floaty frocks, hot pants and skater skirts, but all done with a modern twist so it avoids looking like a night at the local 70s theme bar.
First up is possible the mightiest of all retro style buys and that’s the flare – leg-lengthening, easy to wear, and a welcome change from skinny-ville these have got to be the starting place for any seventies inspired wardrobe. Let Jane Birkin be your guide and pair your flares with a boho-luxe white top like this one from Denim & Supply and natural ‘I woke up like this’ hair. The ripped detail gives them a modern edge, just add a trilby and these beautiful Clarks tan block-heel shoes.
The next piece to add to your look is a flirty little skater dress, the paisley print gives this one a real sense of decade, switch out high boots and add a more contemporary twist with ankle boots and it’s going to help you transition right through the season. Ali McGraw from the epic romance Love Story is our muse here – this Ossie Clarke number shows just how much staying power the skater dress has.
A seventies trend needs a pair of super-short shorts – I refrain from using the term hotpants, but you get the picture. The trick is to add layers and texture to stop them looking too high-summer and then pare it back for when the sun’s shining. An open stitch cardigan is the perfect foil, and ankle boots make them feel relevant for right now. Just add a slouchy bag.
Last up is an ethereal, floaty dress – we’re looking at you Stevie Nicks, Charlotte Rampling and Cher. This one ticks all the boho boxes, the ruffles tap right into the Flamenco detailing seen on the catwalks and it’s perfect with a little denim jacket, a fringed bag and tan heels.
Hope you’re as excited as us for a little retro injection and don’t forget to check out our other spring trends right here!
