The Cannes film festival is the most glamorous film festival in the world. For two weeks, A’list stars from all continents meet in the South of France to battle it out for the Palme D’Or prize. There’s a premiere every single night but the opening and closing night galas are particularly impressive and this year’s first night did not disappoint judging by the amount of stunning stars on the red carpet outside Cannes Palais Des Festivals.
This year the film was called La Tete Haute (which means Standing Tall). It’s rare that a French film opens the festival and even more rare that one directed by a woman opens it and there was a real display of sisterhood among the stars at the premiere. American actress Natalie Portman looked especially glam in a red maxi dress.
But it was the dress worn by 12 Years a Slave actress Lupita N’Yongo that really captivated the cameras’ flasbulbs. She’s about to star in a remake of the Disney film Jungle Book, so maybe the green colour is a signal to the jungle vibes? There are some gorgeous green dresses at Very right now.
Sometimes a dress is as much about the shape as it is about the colour and I do admire the white dress that Victoria’s Secret model Karlie Kloss wore. She’s just starred in her pal Taylor Swift’s music video and ‘wouldn’t rule out’ more screen work. I’m sure she’ll get snapped up if she pursued it – who wouldn’t want to see more of her on screen?
Naomi Watts, meanwhile went for a silver dress with feather embellishment and a train. If you can’t show off at an occasion like this, then when can you? Lots of stars have worn gold dresses recently so this was a cunning move on her part.
Julianne Moore also went for silver, making me wonder if this is starting a silver trend. I am going to the film festival next week, so I promise I will report back on what I see.
I expect to be seeing a lot of Sienna Miller as she is a judge on the festival jury panel – one of the people that will have a say in who gets the Palme D’Or. It’s an honour for her to be there and an honour for us to have a Brit on the panel. She stayed simple and elegant on the first night in a blue maxi dress – tres chic.
So that’s it from the first night but I’ll have more goss next week when I am in Cannes (*SQUEAL*). Who do you think looked the best at the opening?
