Movie Highlights: 2016 Recap And 2017 Predictions

In 2016 we’ve seen the release of some high-budget, spectacular blockbusters as well as some charming indie movies. Each movie release has usually been accompanied with a glitzy film premiere to make an impact in the newspapers, magazines and online to entice us all to watch the film.

As we approach 2017, let’s have a look at some of the highlights of 2016 to recap on the films and what the stars wore to the premieres. It’s always fun to look at the best of the best when it comes to outfits to inspire us to make an effort with what we wear ourselves. And then let’s look ahead to 2017 and find out what we can expect in terms of film and celebrities walking yet more red carpets. Showbiz never stops!

The film highlights of 2016 were:

Nocturnal Animals

Fashion designer Tom Ford’s second directorial effort is tense and dark but it’s also beautifully shot. Each frame is carefully crafted and every image is chosen for a reason. Nocturnal Animals will often leave you open mouthed at the beauty and simplicity of the set. It tells two stories—one about a morose art dealer in LA, played by Amy Adams (above), and the other a fictional tale she’s reading. Amy deserves an Oscar nomination for this emotionally captivating film. And she deserved some kind of fashion recognition for her outfit at the New York premiere in  a stunning red maxi dress. This is power dressing at its finest and a snub to anyone who dares suggest that redheads can’t wear red dresses!

The Revenant

Leonardo Di Caprio won Best Actor at the Oscars for his role in this film and it did well in general, winning three Oscars. The scenery in this movie is visually stunning as Leo’s character travels through dense woodland in treacherous weathers, while escaping native Indians and running for his life. However, at the premiere he look smooth and calm in a classic black suit. You wouldn’t expect anything less given that he’s had more than 20 years of acting in films and walking the red carpet at their premieres.

Bridget Jones’ Baby

We’ve waited 10 years for another Bridget Jones movie and now that it’s here it did not disappoint thanks to an attention-grabbing storyline. Bridget’s pregnant and doesn’t know who the father of her baby is. It could be her on-off lover Mark Darcy (played by Colin Firth) or it could be a dating app entrepreneur (played by Patrick Dempsey) with whom she had a one-night stand at a musical festival. Either way, Bridget is warm, loveable and makes us feel better that we’re not the only ones with less than perfect lives. Her real-life alter ego Renee Zellwegger looked gorgeous at the film’s London premiere in a black one-shoulder maxi dress.

Bad Moms

This film starring Mila Kunis, Kathryn Hahn, and Kristen Bell is one of the year’s most laugh out loud comedies, acknowledging that motherhood can be hard and that it can be hilarious. As it’s made by the directors of The Hangover movies, you can tell that the script will be awesome and the characters likeable. Kristen Bell wore the best outfit on the premiere trail, looking summery, fresh and pretty in a yellow midi dress embellished with flowers. You’ll cheer everyone up and get the party started in a dress like this.

Ghostbusters

This film caused a lot of controversy. Some loved it and some hated it. However, there was no hiding the fact that this was female focused and about a team of women that were strong and in charge. What’s not to like about that? Comedienne Melissa McCarthy was a tough paranormal researcher, who was feisty and fierce. She teams up with a physicist and an engineer for help and the women save New York City from ghosts. As it was a female focused movie, there was lots to look at on the red carpet but Leslie Jones made the most impact in a bold red maxi dress. Talk about stopping everyone in their tracks!

The BFG

If you read Roald Dahl’s heartwarming The BFG as a child, you’ll likely be entranced by this big-screen adaptation. Sure, it’s a little long, but Steven Spielberg has gone to great lengths to make something that holds our attention. The film had the worldwide premiere in Cannes where British actress Rebecca Hall looked cute and pretty in a fabulous floral maxi dress. A floral dress is uplifting due to all the lovely colours, while the dark base for the flowers means that it’s also flattering.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Every Christmas needs a Star Wars movie! This is a prequel to the action, explaining the build-up to one of the previous movies so it’s suitable for everyone, whether you’ve watched the other films or not. What’s very cool about it is the star of the film is a woman. Move over Luke Skywalker! The heroine of this film is Jyn Erso, played  by Felicity Jones. She was also the star on the red carpet, looking radiant at the London premiere in a magical grey maxi dress.

What was your favourite movie of 2016?

In 2017, we can look forward to:

Beauty and The Beast

Starring Emma Watson, this is a live action re-imagining of the classic fairytale in the same way that Lily James played Cinderella in 2015. Ex Downton Abbey actor Dan Stevens plays the Beast.

Transformers: The Last Knight

This looks likely to be a hit at the box office given that it’s trailer has already had more than 100 million views on YouTube. The film is directed by Michael Bay, with Mark Wahlberg and Stanley Tucci reprising their roles from Age of Extinction, alongside Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, and John Turturro from the first three films.

The LEGO Batman movie

The original LEGO movie was one of the film highlights of 2014 with Pharrell Williams’ song Happy being a huge hit, so the LEGO Batman movie has a lot to live up to. This film contains all the classic batman characters like Batman, Robin and the joker but they’re made from LEGO.

T2 Trainspotting

Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) reunites with Spud (Ewen Bremner), Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), Begbie (Robert Carlyle) and other old friends after returning to Glasgow. The original Trainspotting was released in 1996 – 20 years ago – so will the older cast be able to hold our attention. As the original film was such a classic, no doubt a lot of people will watch it to find out.Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Johnny Depp is make in a role he’s brilliant at. Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Capt. Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Capt. Salazar, escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea including him. Capt. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the sea. It’s escapism at it’s finest.

Dunkirk

One Direction’s Harry Styles makes his acting debut in Dunkirk, which is about the Allied soldiers in the Second World War. Stranded in Northern France, Harry’s regiment must make it to Dunkirk if there’s any hope of a rescue. The British Navy asks civilian boats to help and everyone struggles to save some (but not all) of the soldiers. This film is very dramatic and very emotional.

Spiderman: Homecoming

There have been a lot of versions of spiderman recently with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield taking turns to play Peter Parker. But now Tom Holland takes up the mantle and the film is about a movie Spiderman trying to get used to his new powers. The best thing about this film is that it stars Robert Downey Jr and his Ironman character Tony Stark, making reference to the fact that Ironman and Spiderman teamed up together in the Marvel movie, Captain America.

Are you excited about any movie in particular?

Have a lovely Christmas and New Year.
