Smart Kooky

New Girl star Zooey Deschanel explains how becoming a mum has made her better at me time and why she was in no rush to lose her baby weight.

Star of E4 comedy New Girl, Zooey deschanel is returning to our screens with a brand-new series of the hit show. the actress took a short break during filming to have her daughter, Elsie Otter, now ten months old, but was soon back playing her quirky on-screen persona, Jess.

600x600-zooey-image-2
In real life, Zooey is sharp, clever and fuelled by a steely determination that has ensured her success as an actress, musician (she is one half of folk duo she & him) and blogger (the star sold website hellogiggles to Time Inc last year).

600x600-zooey-image-1

After making her name in a string of cool, indie films including Almost Famous and 500 Days Of Summer, 36-year-old Zooey landed the lead role in her own sitcom, New Girl, playing Jessica day, an offbeat school teacher who moved into an apartment with three men after splitting with her long term boyfriend. although she’s earnt both golden globe and Emmy nominations, Zooey now calls motherhood “her most important project ever,” and explains how it’s finally taught her to slow down and create more balance in her life.

Work, rest and play
A self-confessed workaholic, Zooey admits that she often finds it hard to switch off. “on a scale of one to ten, I’m a ten on the workaholic scale,” she says. “I don’t sleep in. I’m a go-to-bed early, wake-up-early kind of person. I hate the feeling of waking up at noon.” but since becoming a mum in July last year, Zooey believes it has forced her to relax her ambitious nature and says she’s much better at carving out some me-time these days. “I’ve slowed things down a bit,” she admits. “I think it’s good for your whole self – your creative self, your professional self and just your soul – to take a little time for yourself and your family. You can spend your whole life going after things, but I think you risk missing out on some really powerful self-reflection.”

Baby balance
And although she is looking great following her pregnancy, Zooey is quick to point out that she was never going to be one of those celebrities who snaps back to their pre-pregnancy size in a matter of weeks. “To expect someone to look like her pre-baby self immediately is odd,” she explains. “Because you just grew a human and then birthed that human – there’s a lot that needs to go back to where it was. all your organs move around, for christ’s sake!”
Instead, for a Hollywood star, Zooey is refreshingly realistic about body image. “I’ve always gone my own course and never been someone who had the need to be super skinny. I like a healthy look. I don’t buy into that skinny-is-better mentality. I just eat healthy and work out and don’t worry about my weight too much. actresses aren’t models, and most of them never wanted to be.”

Fitness For Fun
Zooey’s approach to working out has always been to have fun rather than to lose weight. “A lot of people work out to be skinny. that’s so boring, and it seems like a depressing goal for a modern woman,” says Zooey. “I work out to be healthy and because I like it. I do sports or classes, things that engage my mind.” mixing it up with hiking alongside her husband, film producer Jacob Pechenik, hoola-hooping and even tap dancing keeps her exercise routine interesting. “If you’re active, fitness will follow – and probably a good figure, too.” A firm believer in achieving a healthy mind as well as a healthy body, she has ‘I don’t buy into that skinny is- better mentality’ the actress stars in hit comedy New Girl Zooey enjoys hiking with hubby Jacob a great tip for instantly uplifting your mood. “everyone needs a theme song!” she recommends. “It should make you feel like a million dollars. mine is Friends Of Mine by the Zombies. It makes me feel extremely happy.”

600x600-zooey-image-3

Food Fight
A former vegan, Zooey struggled to sustain it as she has coeliac disease and suffers from allergies to dairy, wheat and soy. “to be a gluten-free vegan is, like, the most difficult thing you can possibly be. and I lasted, like, six months,” she laughs. but as a keen cook, she loves to whip up healthy recipes for her friends and family. “I find it really
satisfying to bake for other people – cupcakes, cookies and cakes. I make a good quinoa spaghetti with pesto and zucchini. pesto is one of those things you can experiment with, and one day I was like: ‘What if I used hemp seeds instead of pine nuts because they’re more nutritious?’ I’ve made it for a lot of dinner parties. It was a hit!”
Doing things on her own terms and refusing to compromise has become the secret to Zooey’s success. So now that she’s nailed her career and is loving life as a new mum too, what is the biggest lesson she has learnt along the way? “If I could give my teenage self any advice, it would be: ‘calm down!’ In fact, if I could relive one day of my life, it would be the worst day of seventh grade, just so I could appreciate how much better life is now.”

Tune in to see Zooey in the forthcoming series of new girl, coming soon on E4

Celeb Interview- Nathan Sykes

As one fifth of boy band The Wanted, 23-year-old Nathan Sykes was always known as ‘the cute one’. Now, he’s back as a solo artist, and his third single, the very saucy Give It Up, is set to be a huge hit. Currently on tour with Little Mix, we caught up with the singer for a chat…
How has solo life been treating you?
I have never been happier – if I’m completely honest! Especially on the creative front. The videos and songwriting are all coming from me – there are no discussions with four other people or input from anyone else. It’s very much a me driven project, and it’s exciting. Every day I’m learning new things about myself as an artist and as a person.
Is it like starting again?
Absolutely! I get really excited that people are treating me like a new artist. I was nominated for Best New Artist as part of the Radio Disney Music Awards recently and that was amazing. The fact that people are taking it seriously is so nice.
You are on your third solo single now…
I know, it’s mad isn’t it? It’s called Give It Up and I think it shows yet another side of me. With my first solo single, Kiss Me Quick, you got the cheeky playful side, then I really stripped it back for the second, Over And Over Again, and I think this one is sexier.
When I started writing it, I didn’t think I’d have a sexy song on the album. I think I almost surprised myself with it.
Is there anything you particularly need to give up?
I think I probably need to give up my laziness. In the Over And Over Again video there’s a scene where I take off my shirt. On the day, I was looking at all the different scenes and then thought: “Oh, no! I haven’t been working out, this is going to be really embarrassing.” So I literally got on the floor and did 20 sit-ups – but then realised it was a bit too late for the sit-ups! I should be in better shape than I am.
Have you enjoyed being on tour with Little Mix?
I’m really enjoying it. I’ve just been with my guitarist Louis and I get to play the piano as well. The Little Mix ladies are amazing. They are the loveliest girls and are so talented too. That shows when they are performing – their vocals are outstanding! It’s a pleasure to be part of their tour, and I know half the team from my time with The Wanted, so it has been nice seeing them as well.

600x600-mixing it up individaul3
Will you be bringing out an album soon?
Oh yes, the album is due out in the autumn, which is exciting. It’s a complete introduction to me and hopefully some of the old fans will like it, but it’s also a time to make new fans too. There’s a lot of variety on the album, but essentially it’s a pop album with soul, R&B and jazz thrown in. There’s one more collaboration to come too, with a male artist you won’t be expecting!
You performed again recently with your ex-girlfriend Ariana Grande. Was that weird?
It was really nice working with her, and I think it shows real maturity that we can put everything aside and just focus on the music. A lot of people in that situation wouldn’t have done it. She is a sweetheart and she’s having great success at the moment, so it’s great to see her doing so well. We are both very supportive of each other’s music.

600x600-mixing it up individaul
She has launched her own fashion line. Is that something you’d like to do in the future?
Well, it’s not something I’ve thought about. I’ve been busy concentrating on my music. I do keep an eye on the fashion side of things, though.
Where do you go shopping?
I try to keep it sophisticated, so I’ve stopped wearing jeans and now wear trousers that are rolled up. I go shopping at Cos, Reiss and I like the French designer Sandro too. I do love my shoes. I’ve got some from designer Louis Leeman. They’re cracking!
How many pairs do you have?
Too many! I still have all my hightops and boots from my time in the band, which I don’t even wear any more. There’s probably a room full of clothes and shoes from back then… so, if anyone wants them!
What’s coming up next for you after the tour?
I’ll probably be going back to America. I’ve got lots of summer shows to do. There’s a great reaction to the songs over there, which is amazing.

NAME: Stephanie Withers
CHILDREN: Finlay, two and Parker, six months
BLOG: chalkkids.co.uk

What do your kids love to wear?
For Finlay, loose jumpers, harem pants, dungarees and rompers. Parker tends to wear a simple bodysuit with some cute baby leggings and moccasins.

Are there colours or patterns you prefer to dress them in?
I love neutral unisex shades on the boys. Occasionally, I like to pick up the odd out-there patterned item, such as a mouse-print jacket.

Which children’s buys are key for spring/summer?
I love short dungarees for boys and twirl dresses for girls. For babies, sunsuits and bloomers look really sweet.

“I love adding a pop of colour through accessories.” Caps, 6WU4G, £12 (two pack),

“This is a great bag for taking on all your adventures!” Converse Backpack, 6NFWL, £30

“Simple t-shirts can be styled in so many ways.” Ralph Lauren SS Classic Tee, 6VGG6, from £19

“Who said only girls can wear pink?” Ralph Lauren Classic Swim Shorts, 6VGGX, from £35

What are your packing musts for the kids?
For the plane, a couple of their favourite toys, an activity book, snacks and an iPad loaded with some cartoons and learning games. It’s worth investing in some good-quality sandals in a neutral colour as they’ll go with everything.

How do you style up the kids’ wardrobes?
I love adding a pop of colour through accessories. One of the easiest ways to do this is with a hat, patterned leggings or some cool socks.

What is important to you when buying clothes for the boys?
It’s vital that their clothes never restrict their ability to play freely, so i pick comfy fabrics.

What are the boys crazy about?
Finlay is obsessed with Thomas the Tank Engine and Parker loves bouncing in his Jumperoo.

What couldn’t you live without as a mum?
A comfortable baby carrier, a compact pram, a changing bag – and my coffee machine!

What are some of your favourite places to go with your children?
I love taking them for a walk along the beach boulevard where we live in Aberdeen. it’s such a pretty spot and has a playground close by.

Tell us a bit about your blog…
I started Chalk Kids as a way to share my love of kids’ fashion and unique interiors. I also wanted to connect with other like-minded women who are mothers.

Download a water alert app. Make sure you stay hydrated

Get 8 hours sleep. Stress can help cause bloating so get enough sleep and try to relax

Don’t use scales. If you base your goals around how you look, you’ll never be satisfied.

The Bold and The Beautiful

Get Fearne Cotton’s eclectic luxe interiors look..

No one does quirky-cool like Fearne Cotton. Whether it’s on the red carpet or in the house, the mum of two never fails to impress. Her edgy take on fashion perfectly translates into the world of interiors to create a home look that’s opulent and, of course, seriously stylish. And, with her latest Very.co.uk interiors collection, she’s done it again. “My house is a mishmash of pieces from different eras,” reveals Fearne. “I just love a vintage feel to it all. It’s about experimenting and finding things that suit you.”

So, why not follow our designer’s lead and embrace the bold and the beautiful in your home this spring?

Tie your theme together with plenty of touches of greenery. Plants help to soften the edges and give your room a homely vibe.

Aim to incorporate a little colour alongside the neutrals. “a bright piece of artwork or a floral cushion pops against a cool grey background,” says Fearne.

Be brave with print and invest in a statement piece of furniture. Pattern doesn’t have to be confined to just wallpaper and cushions.

Trend watch: candy crush

With bright shades against cool greys and whites, the ‘candy colour pop’ trend is a contemporary twist on the retro 60s look. BLOGGERS CORNER

We chat to the coolest parent bloggers around to get their top tips and picks!

Name: Natalie Wong
Children: Gabriella, four, and Lucia, 23 months
Blog: mummygorgeous.com

What do your two girls love to wear?
I always get them involved when shopping, so we don’t have unworn or hated outfits. Gabriella likes dresses and skirts as much as leggings, chunky knits and t-shirts. Lucia is another story. She’s at that age where she doesn’t like wearing any clothes!

Which kids’ pieces are a must for Spring?
A raincoat, a nice shirtdress, a gilet and wellies. I blame Peppa Pig for the number of shoes and boots ruined by jumping in muddy puddles!

You’re so glamorous. Does that side trickle down to your girls?
Am I? Thank you. I don’t feel quite so glamorous these days. I try, though! I think it has an effect. I’m sure most little girls look at their mummy and like to mimic their style.

Are they into fashion?
Gabriella is. She likes to look nice and has an eye for clothes.

600x900-blogger

River Island Girls Denim playsuit, 7437H, £18, Hunter Original Junior Wellingtons, 2CEEX, from £32, Name It Long Sleeve Stripe Dress, 6T7EX, £30, French Connection Marble Structured Dress, 6NYPY, from £48

What else do they like?
Both girls are so into arts and crafts. They enjoy drawing and painting. Gabriella’s quite a tomboy. She’s a fan of Paw Patrol. Lucia is obsessed with Peppa Pig. She’s more girlie.

Where do you look for fashion inspiration?
I’m a traditionalist and love a magazine that I can flick through. I like to peoplewatch too. I’m completely inspired by my fellow ‘Notting Hillers’. Anything goes here!

What can’t you live without as a mum?
A bag that’s big enough for snacks, toys, paper, pens, my iPhone and a camera. I love to capture simple moments.

What about your style?
I like a neutral palette: black, grey, nude, blush and white. If I’ve had a sleepless night, it’s not too difficult to decide what to put on!

Has your look changed since becoming a mum?
I dress for comfort now. I run around with my girls in the park, so the active-wear trend is great. I like getting dressed up from time to time, though.

How do you spend your time as a family?
Hyde Park is like our second home. My daughters love afternoon tea. I think it’s the pretty cakes and sandwiches that keep them entertained.

Interiors blogger Amanda Cottingham writes at theanamumdiary.co.uk and is a self confessed lover of all things quirky. Amanda, who has more than 250,000 followers on Pinterest, can spot a good textile from a hundred paces and has a keen eye for detail.

450x270-image-1

“My biggest interiors tip is that if you love it, go for it. Yes, you can go with current trends, but I think homes should be filled with your personality. If you love something – whether it’s a style or a particular piece – start with that and work your room around it.”

600x600-image-1

“Because I travel quite a lot, I chose a console table with a display shelf that I keep travel memories on. It holds things like Tanzania shillings and a spaghetti charm from Florence. I’m also a little obsessed with photography and cameras, so I keep those there too.”

600x600-image-2

“My office is at the far end of the living room. It was important that the style was integrated into the space. I decided to surround myself with my collection of magazines and vintage bits and bobs.”

230x300-image-1

“My favourite room is the smallest in the house: the en suite. It’s light, bright and a reflection of my eclectic interiors style. I love the floor tiles, which I was told wouldn’t work. I’m so glad I pushed for them because they make the room.”

Calm your living spaCe

Turn a busy living area into a Zen-like sanctuary with cool colour palettes and classic prints.

Arguably one of the most-used rooms in the house, it’s easy for the living room to become cluttered and busy. This is exactly what you don’t need when you’re trying to create a calming sanctuary to relax in after a long day.

The quickest way to take your living room from chaos to calm is to rethink your colour scheme. Opt for pale blues, greys and creams as your base palette, keeping patterns subtle and classic. Textiles are vital for a sense of cosy luxury, but avoid too many throws or cushions as they can end up being yet more things to tidy.

Here are our six top tips for calming your living space…

600x600-numbers-1Accessorise your home with glassware and pretty floral arrangements for a grown-up, polished finish.

600x600-numbers-2A gallery of mirrors makes for a great feature and it’s a simple step to reflect more light around your room.

600x600-numbers-3Floor-length curtains in a subtle metallic shade adds a sense of understated elegance.

600x600-numbers-4Create interest with mixed textured textiles in metallic and floral prints, but opt for neutral shades to keep the overall look relaxing.

600x600-numbers-5Choose furniture with a white or natural base for a feeling of laid back order. Pick a few matching pieces for a classic look.

600x600-numbers-6Contrast your pale base colour palette with furniture in a dark lacquered finish to bring edge without compromising on the calming atmosphere.

When it’s cold and dark outside, it’s easy to see why the sofa is likely to win over the gym, especially if you’re the kind of person who needs somebody to push you with your fitness. That’s where team sports come in, the theory being that you’re less likely to bail on a session if you feel like you’re letting other people down. And it’s a double win, as not only will they help you stay in shape but also you may make some new mates along the way. Here are five of our favourite ways to combine fun, friends and fitness. so, what are you waiting for?

Where to play Increasing in popularity thanks in part to the success of the England women’s football team, you can take your pick from an 11-a-side or a five-a-side team. Why it works playing regularly can help to protect against problems such as obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and osteoporosis. A typical match burns a whopping 1,100-1,200 calories. What women say “I first started playing football with my dad in the yard when I was about four,” says England women’s captain Steph Houghton. “then I’d play in the street with my friends, and basically just be kicking a ball against a wall whenever I could. I’ve loved football ever since. Team sports are useful in terms of getting and staying fit because you’ve got all your teammates there to push you on when you’re feeling tired and encourage you to be the best you can be. I’ve made lifelong friends from the game and I’ll be forever grateful for that.” More information The FA’s website can help you find your nearest club. Visit thefa.com/play-football

Where to play A non-contact version of regular rugby, Touch Rugby League can be played in both mixed or single-sex teams – but don’t worry, tackling isn’t allowed so it’s not as rough as regular rugger! Why it works Playing a few times a week, along with the warm-up exercises, offers brilliant physical training. A 40-minute fixture covers about 3km, including sprinting distances of up to 30m. On average, players work at 80 per cent of their maximum heart rate, building muscle tone and burning up to 610 calories per hour. It provides a great HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workout, which burns fat and increases your metabolism. What women say “I wanted to play some sort of sport and I liked how easy it was to sign up and be put in a team. All I had to do was turn up. It’s a fantastic way to get to know people,” says O2 Touch player Jay Chou-Lee. More information Go online to fnd teams near you. Where to play Played both indoors and outdoors, the aim of the game is to throw balls at the opposing team to eliminate them from play. With over 150,000 people playing on a weekly basis, there isn’t a shortage of clubs. Why it works A one-hour session can burn around 350 calories (that’s if you stay on the court without getting hit the whole way through!). All the dodging and throwing makes for a great cardio workout too. It’s great for strength, flexibility and is also a great stress reliever. What women say “I’ve loved dodgeball since I frst played it seven years ago! I love the way it’s an inclusive sport and caters for all people from both sporting and non-sporting backgrounds who are looking to play seriously or just for fun,” says Steph White, Scotland Highlanders’ women’s coach. “I think the people make the sport and the friendships I’ve made mean I enjoy playing and competing even more.” More information Visit ukdba.org

Where to play You can find a basketball court in most local leisure centres, so it’s ideal for those who prefer to exercise indoors when the weather isn’t great. Why it works Whether you’re on the attack or in defence, you’ll be jogging up and down a 94ft long court and you’ll burn on average around 584 calories per hour. Basketball is an excellent full-body workout and helps develop useful, lean muscles. What women say “It can stretch your mind with the technical IQ required as you always look to develop your skills, fitness and athleticism. One of the biggest elements in success is finding chemistry with your teammates. The collective effect of that can be inspiring and hugely enjoyable,” says Stef Collins, a basketball legend and the most capped basketball player in Great Britain’s history. Where to play A full-contact sport, it’s a cross between rugby and running a race except everyone is on roller skates and there’s no ball! Why it works It’s a great cardio workout and is good for your strength, balance and endurance. You can burn 450 calories during a 30-minute roller derby game. What women say “Roller derby is a great way to get fit and be a part of a team,” says Katy Gordon, vice chair of the UKRDA. “It is a real mix of endurance, agility and strength training and is one of the most effective all-round sports for exercise. Most clubs don’t expect you to have any skating experience because full training is provided. And as it’s a sport that started as female-only, there’s a real feeling of empowerment for women, particularly those who fell away from traditional sports as teenagers.” More information You need to join a league to take part.
