Coco Chanel has inspired generations of designers since the 1930s. Her legacy includes the ‘Little Black Dress’,the box jacket and of course the Chanel bag. We also have her to thank for paving the way for costume jewellery – making ‘fake’ completely acceptable for the first time when she teamed her suits and evening gowns with long ropes of fake pearls.
But my personal Chanel inspired favourite is a must-have this season – the Breton top. This has been a classic since she teamed it with palazzo pants decades ago. Inspired by the ease, simplicity and freedom of men’s clothing she took this top from the French sailors of the day and turned it into a wardrobe staple. Since then it has been worn throughout the decades, well and truly standing the test of time. It’s appeal lies in the ability to team it with distressed denim as effortlessly as with chic evening wear.
Coco herself said ‘Fashion is made to become unfashionable’ and this top will never go out of style.
