Glitterbug: how to sparkle this season

Although I’m still waiting for winter to fully set in, I can’t ignore the fact that the festive season is looming but there is one thing that is getting me in the spirit and that’s glitter!

The use of glitter smattered many catwalks recently. From subtle touches of glitter worn on the lower lash line to theatrical glitter-dipped nails trimmed with rhinestones.  With the return of the glamorous disco diva style of the 70s, glitter is not just for the festive season, it will continue into Spring Summer 2011 so here’s how to razzle dazzle ‘em…

Using glitter creates a playful look but be careful not to go overboard – you don’t want to look like a Christmas bauble!  As a general rule of thumb, only one feature on your face should be enhanced with sparkle so if you opt for glittery eyes, team with a plain lip though sparkly nails go with any look!

Barry M Fine Glitter Dust, £4.50 is a loose pearl colour blended with ultra fine, diamond like glitter flecks and it comes in an assortment of shades.  The Black Goldshade is to die for and looks fantastic worn over your entire lid and blended subtly towards your brow, or opt for a more delicate touch lining your lower lashes and inner corner of your eye with a smidgen of starlight. Simply use a fine liner brush to apply and if you want extra staying power, line the area you wish to highlight with a very fine line of petroleum jelly first. This will help the glitter particles adhere to your skin more and keep them in place.

If you prefer more of a sheen than a sparkle, Barry M Dazzle Dust, £4.50 gives a more subtle wash of reflective colour.

Softer shades worn on your eyes with a subtle lick of glitter look fantastic worn with red lips.  Barry M Lip Paint in Pillar Box Red, £4.50 will make Santa blush, or team smoky, more intensive eyes with a neutral shade and pucker up with Peachy Pink, ideal for warmer skin tones or Marshamllow for the fair English roses amongst you.  If you’re unsure of what shade may suit you, this stunning Coral shade suits most skin tones and is one colour that every girl should have in her cosmetic bag.

Nails should shimmer with intent all season long. Paint your nails in a gold shade for extra shimmer or, for a more easily wearable look, choose clear varnish then dip your nails  into a pot of glitter (the Barry M pots are ideal).  For a more subtle look paint only the tips of your nails and dip those in glitter then seal with a top coat for a smooth finish and to prevent flaking.

If you are short on time or all thumbs, take a short cut and use Eyeko Cosmic Polish, £3.50 for talons that twinkle in a flash.

Glitter has the ability to spread so mop up any lone specks with a cotton bud dipped in cleanser and use a legendary concealer such as YSL Touche Eclat Radiant Touche No.2, £24.00 beneath your eyes – keeping the focus on your peepers.

Finish your complexion with a sweep of Barry M natural dazzle, £10.00 across your cheekbones.  This lightweight powder has been carefully blended to be matt but still have a flattering sheen to help disguise imperfections – a definite addition to your shopping list.

Team with a fabulous frock and killer heels and shimmy as you shimmer.
