X Factor – Rock Week Round Up!

This week’s show saw the seven remaining contestants singing two songs in a fight for the place in the semi final next week. After a few shock eliminations Simon wasn’t ruling anyone out – even Wagner.

Louis’ first song choice for Wagner was Creepby Radiohead. With the lyrics; But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo, What the hell am I doin’ here? I don’t belong here – you have to wonder if Louis was struck my comic genius or simply didn’t know the lyrics. His second song Addicted to Love was a return to his signature performance with dancers, lights and plenty of commotion. The studio audience booed both performances but Wagner simply kept on smiling…

One Direction were out to prove that they deserve a place in the final singing Summer of ’69 by Brian Adams and You Are So Beautiful by Joe Cocker. All the judges agreed that they are only just at the beginning of their journey. Simon was very proud indeed.

Last week Mary got her mojo back and continued with two fabulous performances this week – an emotional All I Want by U2 and Brass In Pocket by the Pretenders where she moved around the stage showing off some hot dance moves. Go Mary!

Cher gave two more high energy, big production performances with Avril Lavigne’s Girlfriend (sung from the bonnet of a car). Simon felt it was undoubtedly her best performance so far, and her second song Walk This Way by Aerosmithfurther proved her originality and talent for the judges. Rebecca rocked rock week by singing Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For by U2 and Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones accompanied by backing singers and trumpeters. Her distinctive voice was a hit with the judges and audience alike.

I Love Rock and Roll was Matt’s first performance. It was full of energy and he obviously enjoyed himself surrounded by dancers in animal print playsuits. For his second performance, Nights In White Satin, he left dancers backstage in favour of his guitar. Dannii and Cheryl were up on their feet. For Cheryl it was her favourite performance from Matt. Ever.

Simon commented that if Katie made it through it would be the greatest come back ever. Her songs Sex on Fire by Kings of Leon and REM’s Everybody Hurts where full of energy and feeling. Sadly though she was the first to go in the double elimination, but she left with grace and poise, saying ‘I hope that I’ve inspired people that no matter how many knocks you get, you still put your head up and smile’. And the girl certainly took some knocks.

Rebecca and Matt were the first to be told they were through, followed by Cher who received boo’s from the studio audience. One Direction secured their place leaving Katie, Wagner and Mary – for whom the chanting began.

Mary and Wagner both sang again for a place in the semi final. Mary’s rendition of Unforgettable left me with goose bumps just as she did in her first audition. All of the judges sent Wagner home, even Louis who said ‘Wagner you are unforgettable… but Mary won hands down’.

Next week it gets serious – all five contestants deserve their place in the semi final. I don’t want any of them to leave.
