The Mum of The Year Awards are the Oscars of the parenting world and nominee Michelle Collins added a touch of red carpet glamour to the occasion.
The Eastenders actress lost out on the overall accolade to Coronation Street actress Sally Dynevor – who plays the streets Sally Webster – but she made up for it in the style stakes.
The gorgeous draped maxi dress she wore to the prestigious event at London’s Waldorf Hilton hotel is stunning without making her look like a show-off. It fits her figure without baring her cleavage. The full length allows her to wear heels to lengthen her frame.
Shoes are very important to Michelle as she confesses in our fashion interview below.
QS: What are your red carpet dressing up tips?
MC: “High heels!I’m 5ft 5in and a size 10, but i have quite broad shoulders, narrow hips and a 34B chest. I don’t wear flat shoes asIi feel too diddy, and I’m of that generation where I don’t feel ready to leave the house unless I’m wearing heels.”
QS: How would you describe your fashion sense?
MC: “I like to add a twist to my outfits, for example, wearing pencil skirts teamed with a leather jacket so that i don’t look like I’m going to the office, or jeans worn with a fake fur jacket for a touch of luxury.”
QS: Do you spend a lot of money on fashion?
MC: “It makes me cringe now to remember how extravagant I was during my EastEnders days.In just one day, about seven years ago, I spent £1,000 on a green Balenciaga bag and £700 on a Matthew Williamson coat.”
QS: Have you ever had a fashion disaster?
MC: “I’ve made numerous fashion faux pas over the years. My daughter says the worst thing she’s seen me wear is a silk Top Gun-style flying suit with wide trousers and zips all over. My Mum has it now, but she’s almost 6ft tall and looks amazing in it.
QS: “What’s the favourite item in your own wardrobe?”
MC: “This summer I was given a beautiful, long, 1970s – style, long-sleeved dress. It’s black with a sort of tiger print.”
Tiger print would be great for a night out but a daytime event like the Mum of The Year Awards needs something more sophisticated. If you want a maxi dress that is gorgeous without being garish then try the South short sleeve t-shirt maxi dress from Very – casual but super cool.
The South crinkle cotton maxi dress is a gorgeous green and the neckline is flattering without being fussy
Khahki is one of this season’s hot trends and the Love Label jersey cape tunic will slim the waist thanks to the draped detail
Michelle’s got a beige handbag to complete her look. Check out the French Connection weave clutch bag, which is very similar.
Michelle has just finished a role in the theatre show Calendar Girls and said she’s currently considering offers from other stage productions, wanting to have a rest for TV. We’re not sure if theatre is a rest but we hope to see her treading the boards very soon.
