So, it’s Movie Week on Strictly 2011 and we were promised a host of glamorous leading ladies and handsome matinee idols – plus Shrek! Last week Holly was top of our fashion leaderboard, but ended up in the bottom two and we said goodbye to Anita. Who would show real star quality this week and who risked ending up on the cutting room floor?
Tess got into the Movie Week spirit by channelling 40s Film Noir movie goddess Veronica Lake. Tess’s dresses can be a bit hit and miss, but this week she put together a classic look that is perfect for her blonde hair and willowy figure. Blondes, learn from Tess: a plain, figure-hugging black jumpsuit (like our Love Label Tuxedo Jumpsuit) teamed with a slash of bold red lippy equals instant glamour.
We stayed with the blondes as Robbie & Ola danced to the Reservoir Dogs theme in matching sharp black suits. Bruce cheekily quipped that Ola was overdressed, but, of course, she looked great – as ever.
Kate Moss has also rocked the men’s tailored look to great effect and a tuxedo jacket is a great investment. Go for an androgynous style, like the Fearne Cotton Longline Tuxedo Jacket, as it also has the plus point of providing you with a stylish warm layer that is so valuable during the chilly party season.
Ah, the Rhumba, the dance of death for so many male celebrities, but Harry has proved himself to be a great mover and this dance was no exception. The theme was Robin Hood, as they were dancing to Everything I Do (I Do It For You). The highlight, as pointed out by Craig, was Harry’s hip action in his super-tight brown trousers, but we also liked the delicate gold chain belt on Aliona’s white dress. Belts of all colours and finishes are a versatile, quick way to update party dresses that have been sitting in the wardrobe for a few seasons.
The costume department must have loved this Pretty Woman theme! They did their level best to find a red, off-the-shoulder dress that was close as possible to the one Julia Roberts wore in the Opera scene in the film and Alex did look, well, “pretty” to say the least.
They even ended up with James presenting Alex with the most perfect of accessories – a glitzy diamond necklace! For a diamond look (without the price tag), try our modern Multi Chain and Gem Strand Necklace.
Holly must have read our blog last week, because she’s sticking with the successful black & red theme for her fiery, flamenco-infused Paso Doble. OK, we accept it probably had nothing to do with us, as black & red are the traditional colours for this Spanish dance.
Once again Holly looked great as she stamped and wafted her skirts with style, while Artem did some of the most impressive “caping” we’ve ever seen.
Hmm.. ‘caping’ – that’s got us thinking about the capes that are so much in style this winter.
For the second American Smooth of the night Jason and Kristina took a big risk by dancing to the most famous song-and-dance combo ever, Gene Kelly’s Singin’ In The Rain, which everyone knows off by heart. Very brave, and it worked too!
It was a very well timed dance too, with heavy rainfall all over the UK this weekend. If you don’t have an umbrella in your handbag, it’s time to think about getting one: thanks for the reminder Jason! We personally love the Betty Boop Deluxe Umbrella; super cute and practical to boot.
This was our favourite dance of the night and hats off to the make up team who really excelled themselves with Pasha’s Shrek make-up – wasn’t he the cutest ogre you’ve ever seen?
Chelsee (as Princess Fiona) was spared the prosthetics and clad in a knee-length green dress. Green can be a difficult colour to pull off and it’s important to get the right tone for your skin. We’re not sure that the Shrek-green was the best colour for Chelsee, but there are plenty of lovely green dresses out there this season to choose from, like the gorgeous Oasis Scarf One Shoulder Dress.
Jason and Robbie were head to head in the bottom two, meaning Kristina got very emotional and it was eventually goodbye to – Robbie. We really warmed to him during his run – a classic hard-working Strictly contestant, with not that much skill, but bags of enthusiasm. Bye Robbie – you will be missed!
