The Lovebox festival took place in London’s Victoria Park at the weekend and it was an explosion of colour and brights! This sunny weather really is making everyone more daring and I noticed that the crowds were a lot more experimental as well as the performers. How fabulous!
Lovebox is always an upbeat event as it’s more of a dance music festival than an indie music event and typically dance acts tend to be more flamboyant. But when the sun is out, it adds an extra edge to proceedings, doesn’t it? With Rudimental, Plan B and Mark Ronson, the line-up contained a lot of male acts but when it came to fashion the girls did it the best. Here are my top three favourites from the Lovebox Ladies along with a bit of gossip about what they got up to:
Azealia Banks started off the festival in outrageous style as she headlined the main stage on the Friday night. I don’t know what was more controversial – the green jumpsuit or her risqué lyrics! Still, the crowd seemed to be almost hysterical as she got them shouting along to her hits like 212. She may be a newcomer to the music scene, but she knows how to put on a show.
Lianne La Havvas
I knew Lianne was a talented singer but I’d never seen her live before and I was impressed. She controlled the stage in her bold multi-colour dress and she managed to play her own instruments too. Her 70s sound was a refreshing change from some of the electro beats on the line up and I hear there are bright things to come for Lianne. Her career’s had a meteoric rise since she first performed on Jools Holland’s TV show last year and she’s due to tour the world to promote her album Is Your Love Big Enough. She’s on her way to New York next week to showcase this unique sound. Her voice reminds me a bit of Leona Lewis, she’s so talented! I hope she does us Brits proud in the States….
Based on their Lovebox set, I’d say AlunaGeorge are the up and coming band of the year. If you get a chance to see this electro double act live then seize it. While most people struggle to know the words to most of their songs, few people can stop themselves naturally shifting (and sometimes jumping) to their beat. Their set lifts you up, calms you down and then ends on a high and it helps that both Aluna and George are very good-looking. I loved Aluna’s cute black shorts and crop top.
The final piece of gossip involves a bit of drama. US rapper Lil’Kim was due to make her first London appearance since 2001 but she turned up so late bosses told her there was no point going on stage. Everyone was so dissapointed. What a diva!
Thankfully, the festival season continues with V, Reading and Bestival still to come. Are you going to any? I hope it stays bright!
