I’m so excited for the latest series of Girlfriends to start on ITV2 – drama, catfights…love (hopefully) and to top it all off Very are sponsoring the show! That means hot date, hot dress, but after some of the wardrobe malfunctions on the last series just what should you wear (and, more importantly, not wear) on those all important first dates?
Luckily for the girls and you lovelies, who may well have a hot first date planned for this weekend, I have put together some ideas of what to look out for and of course some of our gorgeous pieces for you to choose from.
Most first dates take place in a restaurant or at a bar and so all the other person is really going to see is your top half (apart from when you strut your stuff to the bathroom). So my advice is to beware the provocative neckline!
When sitting, the focus is brought to your bust, shoulders, neck and face. So I would steer clear of deep V-cut necklines, any wrap-over dresses and instead choose something that won’t slacken when you sit down.
Please don’t go all Victorian on me in a high neck, long sleeved, floor skimming number; all I’m saying is make sure you’re comfortable. Apart from the embarrassment of flashing a little too much cleavage there is always the danger of focussing or worrying too much about whether they can see too much or if you bra is on show. All this worry will just mean that you are not giving the other person any attention, they’ll probably remember you for all the wrong reasons and date number two will be non-existent.
Try these cute little numbers – perfect for making those great first date memories!
We’ve all been there, a dress or skirt that looks great when standing, but as soon as you sit down it rides up showing far too much leg and you spend all night frantically trying to pull it down and end up in an unflattering half stood, half sat position.
Well, to solve this problem midi dresses, pencil skirts and skinny jeans are perfect! Not only will they give you a sophisticated and elegant look, the prints, patterns and waist cinching styles will give you a sultry, sexy finish!
Try these hourglass-giving, svelte silhouette pieces for a knock out first impression…
We all love shoes so this may be a difficult decision, but my tips would be keep them comfy, manageable and super stylish! If you struggle in platforms avoid them as waddling up to your date will definitely not score you any points and neither will tripping unceremoniously as you leave the restaurant. However, if you are comfortable in sky scraper heels go for it as they’ll give your pins some great definition – just make sure you’re in no danger of towering above your date.
Try these on for size…
And finally just some general housekeeping tips:
This is not a night out with the girls so scouse brows and false eyelashes can be left at home. Besides, a lot of men find girls wearing heavy make up a bit off putting. Instead, opt for neutral eye-shadows, a thin stroke of eye liner to the top lid and your fave mascara. If you’re eyes aren’t your thing then go all out and wear a jaw-dropping shade of lipstick for a statement style. I love Lipstick Box by Illamasqua.
You may not think it, but the majority of men notice a girl’s hair and will make a judgement based on it. Although wearing your hair in an up-do is completely fine, it’s probably best to steer clear of tight buns, which are very office-like and regimented.
Finally, wear an unforgettable accessory that’s eye-catching and may also become a talking point. This owl necklace won’t break the bank and is a hoot (sorry hot) trend! Or, if you want to add a pop of colour to your look try this gorgeous beaded necklace.
I can’t wait to see what the girls wear and hope they have some great first dates. Share your first date fashion secrets or mishaps with us and let’s see how the girls get on tonight.
