Glastonbury Festival Gossip And Fashion Trends

The weather for the Glastonbury festival had it’s ups and downs but when it came to style, fashion and fun there were only good things to say about it all. It was one of the best line-ups ever – from Dolly Parton to Metallica and Rita Ora to Kasabian – with music to cater for all tastes.

That was also true for the fashion, as the festival was full of people dressing for comfort. Jumpsuits, jeans, denim shorts, dresses and leather – the celebs embraced their usual style and added some extra colour. There was no strict dress code for the Glastonbury festival this year, with the thought being that the main concern is will you be able to party in it from dawn to dusk?

Rita Ora (above left) and Jaime Winstone (above right) opted for an almost identical look, which prompted Rita to change shortly afterwards. But the combination of a jumpsuit, boots and a leather jacket does work for them to wander round in.

One of my favourite stage looks was new singer Foxes. The red skirt and crop top look fantastic on her and it shows you don’t have to be grungy at Glasto.

Even wearing jeans can be stylish as Alexa C hung and Florence Welch showed below. They made their jeans more chic with a black blazer / gold jacket. A true example of how to mix comfort and class.

If you’re more of a dress person, check out Lana Del Ray’s multi-colour skater dress. It’s loose and floaty so it will keep her cool and it will also mean her friends won’t lose her in the festival field!

Denim shorts have always been popular at festivals and now they’re being worn by Cressida Bonas, the on-off girlfriend of Prince Harry, it shows they’re as hot as ever. I think denim shorts are great for rainy weather as you can dance all day in the rain and just towel down and pull on some warm trousers when it’s time to bed down for the night. Sometimes wearing trousers in the rain makes your legs sticky and damp.

A little leather biker jacket, maybe with some studs, adds a little rock chick edge like Caroline Flack below. As long as it’s not pouring with rain, it will keep you dry while showing off the rest of your outfit underneath.

Basically this year’s Glastonbury fashion was to choose what you like and wear it with attitude. Who do you think looked the best?

Introducing Very’s Neon Brights Trend

Everyone at Very HQ knows I’m doing up my house, largely because I won’t shut up about it. All I’ve been able to talk about for roughly a year is paint, wallpaper, accent colours and light fittings. Seriously. But it’s a lot more fun than it sounds (honest!) and I’m now up to doing up my home’s small-but-perfectly-formed back yard.

So imagine my manic (not at all scary for my colleagues) delight that Very were launching a home trend for gardens. The Neon Brights trend gives your garden, yard, balcony, or even conservatory a vibrant pop of colour for a happy, energised space. Better yet, you don’t need to have proper green fingers to make it work!

Neon Brights 1Gardens in summer are for entertaining so start with a vividly bright table and chairs set that will allow you to have dinner or drinks in the sunshine. A foldable one is fab if, like me, you only have a small space as you can tuck it away when it’s not in use. You can make things extra pretty for your guests with fun ornaments that will lend colour and personality. Try the watering can wind chimes or the teapot planter to give your yard or garden a vintage twist.

Neon Brights 2If you are going to be serving food, it doesn’t have to be BBQ burgers on paper plates. Invest in a great dinner service that you can use indoors as well. Patterned dinnerware is really on-trend at the moment, so this collaboration between Denby and Monsoon will give you something that’s really hot right now, but will last for years. It looks spot on for summertime dining too. Don’t forget that a throw is a great garden purchase as well. In snappy colours it can liven up your garden chairs, or even act as a picnic blanket on your lawn.

Neon Brights is all about having fun outdoors and giving your garden a new lease of life, no matter how big or small it is. Remember you can shop the whole trend from our handy hub so get over there and, remember, the brighter the better!

Travelling Beauty

Packing your cosmetic collection into a compact case is never easy, but following a few of our trusty travel tips you can haul those beauty essentials across international destinations.

Hand Luggage Only

Know your limits – No, we’re not talking about tolerance levels when it comes to budget airline’s seriously strict restrictions (although that probably still applies!), what we mean here is how to be security savvy so you can carry on your bare (faced) necessities. Most airlines have a 100ml liquid limit in place which many of us aren’t on board with, but let us take that heavy weight off your shoulders with our mini beauty bundles that will see your check-in go plane sailing. So whether it’s a weekend trip to chic Paris, uber-cool Berlin or the dazzlin’ delights of the Dam, you’ll look 24/7 glam!

Travel Essentials Bundle

Dry shampoo is your go-to for instantly refreshing roots and giving them a bouncy boost. Vaseline quickly hydrates and adds a subtle sheen to smackers for barely-there beauty. Cheat on the cleanser and toner and fast track to face wipes – no liquid limits and you’ll be out the door in record-breaking time! Scrimp on the serum and heavy hair products and opt for stay-put spray – this one is a weather weapon and will keep the wild windswept look at bay while on the roof top of those city tour buses!

Myleene Klass Travel Must Haves

A good moisturiser and healthy glow is all you need to get up and go for a fast-paced city break as it revitalises and refreshes sapped skin for effortless beauty!

Long-haul Flights

No, no, there’s no limit! – well, to an extent anyway, as long as your check-in case doesn’t tip the scales! Pack your cosmetics into your hold luggage so you’re not as restricted, though stick to one item per product to keep that weight down. Give your holiday beauty a tropical touch-up for a look that’s as hot as that heat wave you’re looking forward to. Here’s what to take…

Fake tan before you go to give yourself a golden glow

Picture the scene: you arrive poolside and everyone is already a bronzed babe. Get a cheeky head start pre-flight and fake it until you really can bake it. You don’t even need to pack this one. And for the pale pretties out there, why not pack a travel tanning kit and build up the colour over a few days for gradual golden skin that looks as if it was achieved au naturel – and don’t forget to slather on the sun screen!

Screen Shot 2014-06-23 at 13.05.53

Pick a bright eye shadow as your sultry staple for summer nights

Enhancing your eyes with a flash of colour is an easy way to take your look from day – night when you can’t take your full make-up bag. Make waves this summer with eye shadows in splashes of deep turquoises and aqua marines that look just as stunning as the seashore.

Say aloha to neon nails

Tropical beauty is ultra tantalising, so opt for bright neon nails to shake things up a bit – perfect for cocktail o’clock in the evenings! Very have a wide selection ready at your fingertips, so why not try zesty orange or gorgeous grapefruit that will make your sun-kissed skin pop.

Punchy pouts

Pop a lipstick or lip gloss into your case for instant evening glam that looks so lip-licking good. Choose fruit punch colours like mouth-watering peach or Copacabana coral.

Carry your beauty essentials in these cute cases:

Bikini Beautiful

Summer is finally here! And although we may not be seeing much sun on our home shores it’s ok, because you’re about to jet off on holiday! Along with sandy beaches and plenty of cocktails, holidays let me indulge in one of my favourite hobbies – bikini shopping. I’ve heard many a rumour that this activity fills ladies with a dread like no other, and I think I’ve worked out why. All blogs/articles/anything remotely bikini related dishes out advice on how to hide the parts of your body you aren’t so keen on. How about some self-love here ladies?! With this in mind, pick your favourite part of your body – be it your lengthy pins, pert derriere or uber toned arms and then pick out the perfect swimsuit for your summer vacation using my helpful recommendations.

Long Legs

Welcome to the club! As a tall lady I am all about the leg and the more high waisted styles make them look never ending. This pretty number from Motel is perfect for showcasing those pins, plus it has a super sunflower print and a cute frill top to add something a little different to the style.

Motel Sky Bikini

Flat Stomach

If you’re one of those lucky ladies that has wash board abs, even after a night on the cocktails, then get yourself some low rise briefs to get that stomach front and centre. Tie bikinis were practically made for you guys, giving you the freedom to go all floral fancy or add a zesty touch to your summer style with this lemon print bikini.

Resort Triangle Bikini Set

Pert Bum

If you’ve a derrière to die for, opt for a patterned bottom and a plain top to draw the eye downwards. It’s easy to mix and match now too, from these stunning animal print briefs to the classic sailor stripes. Move away from tie sides as these can sometimes sag, whereas fitted briefs will show off your toned tush to perfection.

Resort Mix and Match Hipster Briefs

Brilliant Boobs

Yay for having fabulous assets! To show them off and also stay comfortable, you need to focus on support. Freya go from a D cup right through to a G cup and trust me, you don’t have to compromise on style! This woodstock print bikini lifts in all the right places and has a gorgeous print, but if you think you’re limited to thicker straps, think again. Freya have some wonderful 50s styles so you can rock the vintage look that your curves were made for – enter the Hello Sailor Underwired Bandeau!

Freya Acapulco Underwired Sweetheart Padded Top

Hypnotic Hips

If you can shake it like Shakira then it would be rude not to show it off. Anything that draws attention your killer curves is going to work. These gorgeous bottoms from Caprice highlight your hips, with a wonderfully bright pattern that’s perfect for soaking in the sun. High waisted also work brilliantly for showcasing your figure, along with vintage style swimsuits – think Marilyn Monroe and you get the idea!

In-between the beach and the bar there needs to be some tech. We’ve got your suitcase must-haves well and truly sorted here…

1) Samsung Tab 3 2) Beats Headphones in Pink 3) Samsung Bridge Camera 4) Kitsound Hive Bluetooth Speakers 5) Roberts Retro Radio in Red

Ah summer, the season of leg shaving and craving skin like Shakira! We can’t give you that unfortunately, but we can give you a gorgeous fake tan with a little help from our St. Tropez expert – watch the video & glow…

This month, the hotlist was taken over by all things vacation! Get ready for your Madonna moment with our top 10 style things.

A throw me on maxi dress (or two!) is every travelista’s suitcase essential. Look to prints and wear all day long.

When we say you absolutely need this season’s shades, we’re not talking colour. Instead, pack a big pair of statement sunnies to really pack a VIP punch around the pool. Note: You can even wear them indoors.

Hey, spaghetti arms! ‘90s straps are back so stock up on cami dresses and little tops that will go with everything.

There’s no limit or rule here, you simply can’t pack too many bikinis. For an extra glam look that you could even wear to the bar with your shorts, go for a statement one piece with sexy cut outs.

Holidays are made for jewels. Go for big hoops and statement neck candy, stack up your bracelets and add colour. You’ll even need bling in your sunnies.

A touch intimidating, but once you’ve found one you love – you’ll never be out of it, we promise! Start off with short playsuits if you’re not sure about full trouser boldness.

Denim, printed and crochet – pack all three then rock around the pool AND the party peeps.

We’re SO happy these are back on-trend that we’ve got all the colours of the rainbow up for grabs – you’re welcome.

Unfortunately your jellies won’t quite go with your party dresses, but sparkling pair of embellished sandals will do you right all week long.

We heart kimonos – they’re just that little bit boho and just that little bit glamourous. PERF.

Fashionable Reads

Whether it’s the era, the writing or just a genuinely marvellous book, literature can easily have an impact on our style. Admittedly certain books stand out more than others and as much as I would love to don robes and a witches hat everyday of my life, Harry Potter chic just doesn’t cut it in the fashion circles. Here are some of my more acceptable fashionable reads to take trend tips from.

The Great Gatsby

Gatsby Inspiration

One of my all time favourites, The Great Gatsby has serious glamour shimmering across every page. Not too long ago Leo brought his own portrayal of Gatsby to the big screen and the book is just as lavish. Written and set during the height of the famous roaring 20s, the novel focuses on Mr Gatsby, an illusive figure who holds fabulously wild parties and a hidden past. Adding a dose of this novel to your wardrobe doesn’t have to mean flapper dresses and headbands (though by all means, if this is what you’re feeling then go wild!), we can look to Daisy for plenty of style tips. Gatsby’s dream girl has a closet full of floaty white dresses and gold accessories, adding instant decadence to one of the season’s key looks. Team with a fluttering lashes and an air of privilege to really channel Daisy Buchanan.

Great Expectations
South Short Sleeve Lace Insert Skater Dress

Charles Dickens’ novel may focus on the life of Pip, an orphan trying to find his feet in the big city of London, but for me it’s all about Ms Havisham. She may be a social recluse who can’t get over being left at the alter, but she certainly does it in style. I’m not suggesting anybody should take to the streets in a wedding dress, seeking revenge and scuppering young love, but adding lace to your look will create a wonderfully ladylike air. The novel also thoroughly details Ms Havisham’s dressing room, a haven of antique broaches and sparkling hair pieces to add a timeless touch to your style.

Wuthering Heights
South Tape Cocoon Cardigan

This Gothic novel is the story of tempestuous love that descends into resentment and revenge, making it one of my all time favourite reads. The love affair between Catherine and Heathcliff is all consuming, creating plenty of drama on the ghosty moors. This drama can easily influence your wardrobe, without making you look like an 18th century throwback. Use layers to create movement, with a flowing maxi skirt and an oversized cardigan. Opt for greys and deep purples, along with ankle boots and a slick of purple lipstick to complete the brooding appeal.

    ……………………..       Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland

South Belted Skater Dress
For anyone who has fallen down their own personal rabbit hole and hasn’t heard of this book, it tells the tale of a young girl called Alice who wanders away from her family and finds a mysterious new land. This novel is pure fantasy, so it’s time to embrace the bright colours and oversized accessories. A full-skirt in a block red hue can be teamed with a cream lace crop for a patterned contrast, while a bow tied around your hair adds plenty of girlish charm. For anyone wanting to go all-out-Alice opt for a blue dress and cream Mary-Janes… then all you need to do is find that pesky cheshire cat!

South Sleeveless Shirt Dress

This might seem like a bit of a curveball, but go with me on this one! Matilda was the original bookworm and as a child her love of escaping into a good book really resonated. This classic children’s book centres around the astoundingly clever Matilda and holds a special place in the hearts of many literature lovers. It’s also great for fashion inspiration – even Trunchbull has some classic tailoring going on! Matilda is all about preppy style though, so team your brogues with a smart shirt dress and a battered leather satchel. You can also take tips from Miss Honey and do a pastel perfect look with a pencil skirt and floral blouse – not forgetting a round pair of specs to finish off the teacher trend.

Celebrity Style Steal: Ellie Goulding’s Perfect Party Look

Pop diva Ellie Goulding seems to be looking more glam each time I see her going from androgynous to absolutely smoking hot in a matter of months. It seems like only yesterday, Ellie had her hair in a bob and wore ripped jeans and crop tops to every gig. But at the weekend’s Capital Summertime ball she started off showing off her gorgeous legs in beige shorts and then she got dressed up to party in the sophisticated and chic outfit that you can see above. The leather-look trousers show off her legs but the white top keeps it floaty and feminine.

This look is working for Ellie as she is fighting off attention from men. She was linked to McFly’s Dougie Poynter, then a fitness instructor in Miami, then Dougie again and at the Summertime ball she was spotted getting very close to Calvin Harris. Most of us dream about having one hot admirer but Ellie has three! This does inspire me to take a leaf out of her book and I’ve seen that the South wet look leggings are a very good match for her trousers. Then you need a white top – how about the Definitions strappy high shine cami? This look wouldn’t be complete without a pair of heels. Try the Myleene Klass dotty two part shoes. A good pair of heels makes you walk taller and with more confidence, not that the star must have any confidence issues right now with all that male attention.

Ellie always looks super groomed, so if you want to complete the look, follow in her footsteps with a bit of new make-up. The Elizabeth Arden beautiful colour lipgloss in Coral Kiss will keep your lips kiss ready while the Eylure false double lashes will break hearts when you flutter your lashes.

Let’s hope this outfit brings us just as much luck as it has done for Ellie. There is seriously no stopping her right now!

We Love Lilah! <3

Last week, our summer festival shoot was taken over by the cute, funny and fresh faced model/TV personality Lilah Parsons.

Blog Lilah Parsons for 8Blog Lilah Parsons for 10

(Above Lilah wears the Definitions Boxy Top & Vero Moda Brix Shorts and on the right the Love Label Frill Layered Playsuit)

The MTV presenter posed as our real life mannequin for the day and allowed us to play dress up styling her in all our best ensembles for the summer. International model, Lilah proved that she is no stranger to the camera, with big fashion brands like Chanel and Vivienne Westwood gracing her resume (insert here), she rocked our favourite festival looks and we think she looks fab!

Set in a dreamy London location, the shoot took place throughout various rooms with a shabby chic theme running all the way through the house. The gorgeous Lilah looked even more flawless than ever, wowing in bright summer colours and vibrant tribal patterns.

We began the shoot inside but as the day progressed and the sky got brighter we found ourselves watching Lilah enchant us outside in a feminine tribal printed maxi dress. Our ultimate favourite look from the whole day was a khaki green shirt dress from our own Definitions label that went perfectly with a light woven fedora and ankle boots (Hello Glastonbury).

Things To Do In 90 Minutes: Try Hot Yoga

You know the drill, the hubby has invited the boys round and declared the evening be filled with nothing but pizza, beer and general heckling at the TV. Now if you’re anything like me, this is not an appealing proposition. While I can be tempted to sit down and watch a game or two of the Wimbledon final, football just doesn’t do it for me. As such I have quite the repertoire of what-to-do-when-the-usually-attentive-other-half-is-staring-at-22-men. Top of the list is generally whine at him, point out what a waste of his time this is and sulk until the final whistle. However, when I’m feeling a bit more proactive the first thing I do is head down to my Yoga studio for a sweaty session.

If you’ve yet to try Hot or Bikram yoga then the next time there’s a match make sure you book yourself into your nearest class – then spend the day gulping water and prepare to revolutionise your workout world.

The Low Down

Bikram Yoga: Bikram classes are always 90 minutes long and always do the same 26 postures, twice each with a starting and finishing breathing exercise. It may sound repetitive, but believe me that will be the last thing on your mind. More common thoughts are …

“Wow I didn’t know my eyes could sweat”

“Oh my goodness my face is just one big sweat gland”

“What on earth is a Camel pose?”

You see, Bikram Yoga is the pinnacle of Hot Yoga as it is so strict (no leaving the room, no talking, only very little water at set times) and so regimented. It transforms you body as the postures stretch, strengthen and lengthen muscles you didn’t even know existed and the heat and humidity (40 degrees, 40% humidity) force every last drop of sweat out of your body. It is incredibly challenging, the aim of your first class is just to “stay in the room” and believe me, that is enough of an ask!

Hot Yoga: Hot yoga is a loose term for any physical yoga practice performed in a hot room. This means you can do a standing series, a flow class or even something like a Jivamukti class in the hot room. The benefit of a hot yoga studio is the sheer variety of classes you can try out, and I think this is a better choice for a beginner. Plus, they tend to be a bit less strict so if you need to leave the room to cool down/cry then you can! Common hot yoga thoughts are …

“What is that smell? Coconut? No, Jasmine?”

“Is Vinyasa a type of curry? Why is she talking about food?

“I’m just going to crawl into childs pose and pretend this isn’t happening”

It’s an incredible intense workout –  you will notice as the weeks go by that your posture improves, you sleep better, your skin clears up and your breathing is more disciplined. That’s the beauty of yoga, it works your body the way your body is meant to be worked. Every single runner will admit to the pain, discomfort and injury that comes hand in hand with running, but yoga is the opposite – it’s like therapy for your body! Not to mention, it slims, trims and tones you ready for bikini season.

Yoga is often described as a moving meditation, so whether it’s Bikram or Hot, why not try a class and arrive back at home in a state of blissful calm, it might help you focus as you hear every-single-detail of the match.

Happy yoga-ing, Roanna x

EXCLUSIVE Gossip: Capital Summertime Ball

Capital Radio’s Summertime ball must have been the most star-studded music event of the year so far. There were the divas (Rita Ora, Miley Cyrus and Jessie J), the girl bands (Little Mix) and several boybands like Rixton and Union J. Then Calvin Harris, Pharrell Williams and Ed Sheeran added some testosterone to the mix. Wembley Stadium was celebrity central!

There was a party atmosphere on stage and off. Trust me, I was there getting some backstage gossip and I’ve rounded it all up below.

Miley Cyrus

Miley had the headline set and she made it completely bonkers! Backstage she was walking round with giant rubber ducks that she then threw into the audience. She kept it in the family by introducing and dancing with her 14 year old sister before getting close to a dwarf and then a giant in a jumpsuit. Miley had the biggest dressing room, but what else would you expect from such a diva?

Rita Ora

Rita, looking fabulous in a red dress, sung her heart out to the crowd but backstage she had other issues. Her ex-boyfriend Calvin Harris was also performing and they met for the first time at a Capital Radio event. They avoided each other backstage. Awkward!

Ellie Goulding

Ellie has fantastic legs so of course she wanted to show them off in shorts! I had to ask what her secret was and she revealed she had been taking classes at Barry’s Bootcamp in London, which is David Beckham’s favourite gym. Ellie has taken so many classes she is thinking of training to be a fitness instructor. I don’t know how she’d fit that into her schedule but it’s a nice thought.

Cheryl Tweedy

Cheryl is in love. She is dating a sexy French model and restaurant owner called Jean  Bernard Fernandez-Versini. She revealed ‘she is very happy’, which is good to hear. Cheryl deserves some happiness! On stage, she seemed glowing too. I loved her sports luxe look of a crop top and mini skirt.

Little Mix

Little Mix are the feistiest  girl band ever and they are buzzing right now as they’re being taken seriously in America. They’ve performed on The Today show, which is one of America’s most popular shows. However, I hope they can keep their energy levels up as they’re doing tons of summer festivals and jetting to the States in between each one. That’s a fantastic achievement for a band formed from the X Factor and all of the girls said they would definitely be tuning in – if their schedule allows – when it comes back for another series in September.

So there you have it – that’s the gossip from behind the scenes. With Glastonbury next weekend, the summer of music and partying is officially here. Enjoy!

Introducing Very’s Citrus Twist Trend

Yellow’s not always the easiest colour to work in your home. It can be a bit bright for more relaxed spaces like the lounge or bedroom and if you go too light with it, it can look washed out (or even look like off-white… Yuck!). But Very’s new Citrus Twist home trend gets it spot on by focusing on the kitchen and using vivid pops of bright sunshine yellow mixed with rich creams and crisp whites that’ll make you feel summery and happy.

The kitchen’s the perfect room to take such bold splashes of citrus, and because the trend is focused on cookware and small appliances, you can go full-on sunshine, or just the odd slice of lemon – it’s totally up to you.

You can shop the whole look on our trend hub, but I’m going to take the chance now to pick out some of my favourite pieces.

Citrus Twist 1Like almost everyone at Very HQ, I’m a total caffeine addict, so I need to get coffee in here somewhere. I love nothing more on a lazy Sunday morning than to make a steaming pot of coffee and take a cup back up to bed with me so this cafetiere is ideal. It’ll look great on a shelf or out on the counter top, and it serves a great wakey-up purpose. What more could you want?!

And you’re going to need some hot water to pour on that cafetiere, so a kettle is a must. The Citrus Twist range has a gorgeous retro feel, so this stove-top kettle works really well. It’s got a vintage look (it even whistles!) and it’s got that stunning citrus zing. Even if you prefer an electric kettle, this will still look fab on your stove.

Citrus Twist 2The thing I really love about the Citrus Twist trend is, because it’s based around cookware, the pieces are practical as well as pretty. A set of yellow pans might seem a bit of an odd way to get on-trend, but hey, they’re the right colour and you can make your dinner in them!  Don’t know about you, but I can’t say that about my new handbag (although if I can have the handbag and the pans, I will)!

As I mentioned, creams and whites are the way to set off all the yellow. Accessorise with white mugs and dinnerware, or, if you’re into baking, a good old fashioned mixing bowl like a classic Mason Cash. They add to the retro look and they stop all the vibrant colour becoming too overpowering.

This is a trend to enjoy, so decide on your level of yellow and then energise your kitchen with style as sharp as freshly sliced lemons!
