Rock Star Chic Rules At The Q Awards

The Q Awards are like the Brit Awards but with 10 times more attitude. They’re the event attended by people who make music rather than just sing it and people who are likely to have long-lasting careers so it’s always interesting to attend to find out who’s doing what.

As there are so many indie bands fronted by men – Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys, The Smiths etc – the girls are always under-represented but it was definitely quantity over quality this year. First of all, I caught up with Foxes. She’s a 25-year-old British singer who won a Grammy for her part on Zedd’s dance single clarity and had a top five with her album Glorious.

She presented the Best Newcomer award to Sam Smith and I can tell it won’t be long before she wins more awards herself as she’s so hard-working! She exclusively revealed to me she’s renting a cottage in the countryside for Christmas for her family, which will be the first time she’s had a break since last Christmas. In the past year she’s acted in Dr Who, recorded in LA, released her album and toured the festival circuit. She’s a strong woman and she didn’t feel the need to confirm to a typical awards ceremony tradition of wearing a dress. I liked her smart co-ordinates. What do you think? I almost felt a bit boring in my white dress!

Now onto Ella Eyre, who was nominated for Best Newcomer.

With her curly hair and smart tailored suit, Ella reminds me of a cross between Beyonce and Rihanna. She had a joint number one with Rudimental on their song Waiting All Night and that won a Brit so she knows what it’s like to attend awards ceremonies. However, she’s not used to relaxing at them. When I asked her what she was up to she revealed: ‘Right now, I’m off to the MOBO Awards as I’m performing and then tomorrow I’m in the studio.’ I’d like to know where she gets her energy from. I was so glad to hear that she went on to win Best Newcomer at the MOBOs.

St Vincent is one of the more obscure female artists on the scene but we can expect a lot more from her as she just won Q’s Maverick Award.

After that I had to go and talk to her and found out she plays the guitar, bass, organ, piano and theremin. (A theremin is an electrical musical instrument that detect where the users hands are). Looking gorgeous in a black dress with black stilletos – and an enviable selection of rings on her fingers, she said she gets her fashion inspiration from nature and using her eyes to look at whatever’s around her. The key is to slow down and appreciate life. Hmmmmm, maybe we should all take more notice of this?
