3 Ideas for Valentine’s Dates, Outfits, Hair & Makeup

As the shops continue to push their pink fluffy handcuffs and tacky “BE MINE” bears in our faces, it’s becoming more apparent that V-day is fast approaching. Whether you love it or hate it, your Facebook feed will soon be swamped with “love my gorgeous chick loads” and “my man is the best in the world. Love you bbz” statuses <– while this kind of stuff makes me feel icky, I do love a good Valentine’s spectacle as much as the next romantic. So, I’ve rounded up my top three date scenarios and my idea of the perfect fashion, hair and makeup ensembles to go with them…

Date Idea 1: The Cosy Night In

cosy night in

Tell me I’m massively old-fashioned, but I think we should make a fuss of each other all year-round, not just on Feb 14th. That’s why snuggling up with that special someone in a blanket with some yummy food, a bottle of bubbly and a good film or box set is one of my favourite date night plans – and it works just as well on Valentine’s Day if you want to escape from the hype and do something low-key. For this, your hair and makeup can be equally as low-key – perfect!

Makeup: Bare-faced Chic

Obviously, there’s no point pattering around the house with a face full of makeup and if you’re anything like me, there won’t be so much as a trace of mascara on your lashes by tea time. Bra and makeup off, hair up and comfies on <– that’s my ‘just got home from work’ routine. For a night in with the boy though, I do like to feel fresh-faced and polished, so I might opt for a barely-there makeup look with BB cream and a little bit of tinted lip balm.

Get the look:

– Cleanse your skin with a hydrating face wash (the ‘Gentle Hydrating’ one by Elizabeth Arden is a good pick) before slathering it in a rich, creamy moisturiser. Again, Elizabeth Arden is a skincare saviour when it comes to hydration and her Eight Hour Cream is a popular choice.

– Pop on a light layer of BB cream, such as the Dream Fresh one by Maybelline. I wear this for work and my skin always feels fresh throughout the day. It’s more breathable and much nicer for daily wear than a foundation.

– Finish with a coat of mascara and your favourite tinted lip balm et voilà!

Hairstyle: Tousled Tresses

Perfectly tousled, sexy bed hair is perfect for achieving that sultry Victoria’s Secret model look and it’s a pretty easy style to create, particularly if your hair has a natural wave to it.

Get the look:

– Apply a hydrating hair oil to the tips of your tresses and then sweep it all into a bun a few hours prior to your night in. If your hair is naturally quite wavy, it’s likely to have a tousled look when you take it down later on. Just add salt spray for definition and an extra mussed-up look.

– If you have super straight locks naturally, you might need a little helping hand from a curling iron. If you don’t own one already, Very have lots to choose from – my favourite are the curling wands. Once you’ve curled your locks, brush them through to create a looser look, more laid-back look and then spritz with hairspray for extra hold.

Outfit: Comfy Chic with a Sexy Twist

For a cosy night in, you obviously don’t want to be sat around in your tightest bodycon dress and your tallest skyscrapers, so make sure your V-day outfit is comfortable for this date night scenario. Either wear laid-back casuals, or slip into your favourite jarmies!

Get the look:

– I love the nightwear pieces from Sorbet and this sexy-meets-sweet little satin teddy is spot-on

– Lacy lingerie underneath forms the pièce de résistance of your night-in number. As  a writer for Very, I’m often tempted by the lingerie on the site and again, Sorbet is my favourite so I treated myself to this (ace value) two-pack of satin and lace bras recently. They have matching knickers, too, so you can create a polished look :).

Date Idea 2: The Daytime Dream

Cocktails and lunch in the city during the the daytime is the dream for me – it’s one of my favourite things to do. In fact, I wrote about my perfect Saturday with my bestie over on my personal blog and it pretty much sums up what I’d like to do for Valentine’s day, too – a day out in Manchester with cocktails and food from Turtle Bay. So, what do we have for this kind of date?

Makeup: Pretty in Pink

For me, a sweet makeup look that incorporates just-bitten reds and flushed pinks is the epitome of Valentine’s beauty. Think sugary pinks on the cheeks and rich hues on the lips.

Get the look:

– Start by priming your clean skin to create a lovely silky base for your makeup. Again, I’m not a massive fan of foundation for the day time so I’ll use either BB cream or a mix of BB cream and foundation for this look. Add concealer if you feel you need it and then set with the Stay Matte powder (after trying out a load of high-end and high-street powders, I can honestly say this is the best – and amazingly cheap!).

– Add a pink-toned eyeshadow – glitter optional – such as this Bourjois one in the shade ‘Petale de Glace’ and a sweep of sugary pink blush. Your romantic makeup look is finished in the swipe of a rich pink lipstick.

Hairstyle: Romantic Curls

Tumbling, romantic curls complement your pretty-in-pink makeup look, creating a softness around your face and adding texture to your overall look.

Get the look:

– Brush your clean hair and add a little oil to the ends to keep them moisturised, then spritz some dry shampoo at your roots and gently backcomb it to add a little height.

– After applying a heat protection spray, use a curling wand to create big, romantic curls. For a natural look, start curling from half way down your locks.

– Run some serum through the ends for a glossy finish and spritz with hairspray to hold your look in place.

Outfit: Daytime Glam

Even though it’s the daytime, Saint V’s celebrations call for something a little more fancy than your day-to-day gear. A cute dress, tights, heels and slouchy bag always go down well for this kind of occasion.

Get the look:

I really like this cute co-ord effect dress, teamed with this monochrome tote and these gorgeous block heels.

Date Idea 3: An Amorous Adventure

Dates might be synonymous with candlelit dinners, but going for a picnic in the countryside or a long muddy dog walk sounds just as good to me!  If you are going to venture into nature for your date, you’ll want to strike the right balance between protecting yourself from the elements and looking gorgeous for your valentine (and don’t forget to pack a picnic).

Makeup: The Natural Beauty

Tune into the colours of nature when you’re creating your outdoor date makeup. Think autumnal colours – rich brown hues to create a smoky eye, a neutral lip and flushed pink cheeks.

Get the look:

– It’s all about that base. When you’re up to something outdoors, the chances are you’ll be pretty active and will need to prime your skin up so your makeup lasts all day. The Illamasqua Matt Primer is a fail-proof option, while the Fix and Perfect Pro by Rimmel London offers a cheaper alternative. Apply foundation and set with powder.

– Sweep some blusher over your cheekbones for a flush of colour.

– Finally, line your eyes with a black or brown kohl eyeliner, add a sweep of rich brown eyeshadow and finish with mascara.

Hairstyle: The Fancy French Braid

When I want to gather up loose locks to keep them out of my face, a French braid is my go-to. I think this is the prettiest way to keep your hair in place. If your locks aren’t long enough for a full braid braid, try a boho-inspired braid to the side of your head for a look that’s equally as chic.

Get the look:

–  Give your hair a good brush. I use my trusty Tangle Teezer on my fine, candyfloss hair to get the 3492049302 knots out of it.

– Apply a little oil to the ends and then work your magic with the braid.

– Secure the plait at the bottom with an elastic band (my little sister’s loom bands were so handy for this.) You can leave it as it is, or twist the bottom of the braid into a side bun and secure it with a sparkly clip :).

 Outfit: Countryside Chic

Your outfit obviously depends on what you’re getting up to. Let’s pretend it’s a walk with the dogs, followed by a picnic – a cute dress paired with tights and wellies and an oversized coat is the perfect pick, yes?

Get the look:

For this look, I’m loving these plum-coloured Hunter wellies and this cosy oversized coat with a hood.

What are we thinking?
