How to wear summer stripes

It wouldn’t be summer without an onslaught of stripes. Every year we all embrace this nautical inspired look and with good reason – the classic stripe always looks chic, understated and works with everything in your wardrobe (including florals and animal prints).  If you’ve yet to walk the line, here are a few vintage icons showing us why stripes are always right.

Marilyn Monroe knew that a stripe can be super-flattering on a curvy frame – cinching in the waist and baring your arms helps to give a little structure – this off-the-shoulder top by Lipsy is perfect with white jeans and slick of red lipstick for summer.

No-one rocked a Breton top quite like Audrey Hepburn – the queen of understated glamour, she took the most simple pieces and styled them to perfection.  The key is to keep accessories to the bare minimum – we love this T-shirt from G-Star RAW, the perfect top to chuck in your holiday case for city breaks.

Brigitte Bardot is a styling genius with the classic stripe – this look is all about paring a laid-back style with statement eyes and voluminous hair.  The stripe V-neck top from South is the perfect day-to-night option,  give it a new season spin with black skinnies.

Switch things up with a vertical stripe, it’s a slightly edgier look but as you can see from French chanteuse  Francoise Hardy, it’s easy to wear and looks oh-so-classy – add a statement bangle and tousled hair, this monochrome striped dress from Lauren Pope’s collection is a great place to start.

The humble stripe also makes for an amazing cover up – worn over everything from a cute little dress to skinny jeans, it’s an easy way to make your outfit look more considered, Mia Farrow demonstrates this perfectly with nothing but a simplest of clutch bags.  We’re loving this oversized jacket from Girls on Film.
