The office party, the festive drinks with friends, the Christmas eve party, the party-just-because-party, NYE. Whatever the occasion, we need to up our party-wear game during the magical season of not-so-silent nights and ‘what happened after midnight?’ mornings. This month’s #VeryPartyEdit is decked with plenty of inspo to keep your style on point when the clock strikes 12 and these all get the seal of approval from fashion expert and X Factor stylist, Gemma Sheppard.
A safer alternative to the micro-mini LBD, this beaded playsuit from V by Very creates the same chic look as its classic counterpart, but removes the risk of accidentally flashing anyone after the one mulled wine that probably should have remained in the mug. The tailored shape balances the mini length to maintain a classy aesthetic while the nipped-in waist illuminates your figure’s slimmest point, making it a flattering piece that you’ll feel gorgeous in. Then there’s the pièce de résistance – the embellished cape. This is the deet that infuses the Christmassy sparkle into your outfit, with its intricately embellished design and scalloped edging. “The cape back detail ticks the trend boxes”, says Gemma, “and the embellishments make it extra special”. Yep.
“This wine colour is so right for right now”, Gemma says of the eyelash lace midi dress by Rochelle Humes. I love this section of the colour wheel that permeates Christmas edits – emerald greens, deep wine hues and rich purple tones are more festive alternatives to black and they create that same classic, ladylike vibe. Crafted from a luxe lace fabric, this piece lets you tap into the season’s love for gothic romance, while the sheer scalloped hem lends a conversational twist. The midi design and half-length sleeves provide the perfect amount of coverage to strike that genius chord of winter-ready and just the right amount of sexy.
Reminiscent of Alexander McQueen, Rodarte and Alberta Ferrati’s 19th century approach to the AW15 runways with romantic ruffles and moody blacks, this lace Bardot pencil dress from V by Very sets a distinctly gothic mood and it’s my favourite piece from this collection. The pencil shape and midi length work with the Bardot neckline to radiate pure elegance, while the vampish lace insert to the side panel has got dramatic romance written all over it. The drama of this piece can be dialled up further with of-the-moment makeup – think red berry lips, over-the-top cateye flicks and voluminous, mussed-up hair. “Just add accessories”, Gemma advises for this piece. Our stylist runs with the gothic theme by partnering it with the oversized tassel box clutch and just a touch of colour with the Ellie platform bow sandals by Miss KG.
Culottes are a staple silhouette for AW15 and with this jumpsuit by River Island, you get the high-end, on-trend appeal of the culotte, with the sultry and feminine charm of the sweetheart bandeau neckline to create an undeniably stylish-meets-sexy look. Soft, sumptuous and a touch Studio 54, this faux fur coat is everything when it comes to layering up for flitting between bars. No one likes being freezing cold on nights out, but sometimes it’s hard to find the right coat to offset your party looks – adding textural contrast to your OOTN and being oversized enough to layer over anything, this is spot-on. And it gets the nod from Gemma; “the tonal perfection of this outfit is amazing”, she says.
I don’t know about you, but that’s left me feeling all Christmassy and excited for the scent of fir trees, a warm mug of mulled wine by the fire and all the luxurious, dramatic dressing-up gear for midnight hour on the night before Christmas. The lace Bardot pencil dress with the faux fur coat layered on top is my outfit of choice, along with a moody berry lipstick to capture all the gothic romance of the season and keep my look catwalk-inspired. What’s your favourite look?
