BBC Sportsperson Of The Year Awards: Party Fashion

Every year, our top sportspeople are honoured in a ceremony voted for by the public. They can’t train for it. All they can do is turn up looking their best, be humble and see if the public will remember their achievements over the past year.

This year it was won by Andy Murray for the third year running, and he was the bookies favourite to win given that he’s beaten Novak Djovikic to become the number one tennis player in the entire world. But there were some surprises when it came to fashion as some of the sportswomen looked stunning dressed in their award ceremony outfits rather than sports kits.

Let’s have a closer look at what everyone wore for a final bit of inspiration for our New Year’s Eve outfits. We want something to start 2017 in style, don’t we?

Laura Trott

When she’s not tearing it up on the cycle track, Laura can look really glamorous. She showed that at her wedding to fellow cyclist Jason Kenny earlier this year and she showed it again at the sports awards. In her gold dress, she looks like she’s more ready for the Oscars  than the sports awards – she looked beautiful. If you want to stand out for the right reasons then wear gold or sequins….or both!

Jessica Ennis Hill

Jessica’s had a great year, winning a silver medal in the Rio Olympics despite having a baby since the London Olympics. She announced her retirement recently, but she is still a fantastic role model for getting women into sport. She showed off her trim figure in a black bardot dress, which really suited her.

Rebecca Adlington

The Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer turned sports commentator stood out from the crowd in a long sleeve white midi dress. It’s conservative, but it allows her to show off her toned legs. This is a sophisticated, elegant look.

Claudia Fragapane

Wow! The gymnast turned Strictly Come Dancing star looked fantastic in a black mesh maxi dress . It gives tantalising glimpses of her figure without giving too much away. Warning – a dress like this may make people stop and stare!

Heather Stanning and Helen Glover

A black maxi dress and a red maxi dress are both absolutely appropriate for a formal occasion and the girls’ have made use of texture to make their dresses stand out from the crowd.. Helen is in velver, while Heather is in lace. Which one do you like best?

Sally Nugent

The BBC Sports TV presenter looks like an athlete herself in her super flattering black jumpsuit. A jumpsuit is the ideal alternative to a black maxi dress if you’re not a dress person or if you want to look more strong and fierce. Sally was working, presenting awards on the night so it was important that she gave off a powerful, confident vibe.

Who do you think was the winner of ‘Best Dressed’?
