The BAFTAs are Britain’s equivalent to The Oscars. It’s our chance to show off our world-class directors and producers as well as actors and actresses. Also, it’s an opportunity to show that us Brits know how to host an awards ceremony and after-party (and after-after-party) as the Harvey Weinstein after after party goes on until 4am. That sounds much more fun than The Oscars.
However, it’s just as prestigious as any American award ceremony with stars flying in from all around the world to attend. The red carpet outside the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden was one never-ending stream of A’listers. We’ve been through the pics and picked 10 gorgeous outfits worn by the stars that make us want to throw a formal party. Dresses like this are good for spring and into summer as the stars are dressing for colour and to show off their shoulders – Bardot necklines and strapless styles are very popular with the celebs right now, as you can see below.
Let’s have a closer look:
Emma made one of the boldest outfit choices of the night. From the top, it looked like a gorgeous black evening dress embellished with jewels that gave her even more of a movie star glow. However, as she moved down the red carpet it became apparent that she had matching trousers on under the dress and a cute ankle bracelet. This kept her comfortable on the red carpet and she did a lot of interviews to make journalists happy, which was a refreshing contrast to those who wore more revealing outfits. She won Best Actress for La La Land and she would win any fashion award for taking a risk and pulling it off as her choice made her comfortable and confident, which is what we all want from a dress, isn’t it?
Michelle stood out from the crowd as she was not in a maxi dress. Her glittery sequin embellished mini dress sparkled with every step that she moved and was equally eye-catching in the audience as the camera kept panning towards her. With her platinum crop she has an edge to pull off most styles as it gives her more of a rock chick personality than other stars and that’s why she pulls off that mini dress. It’s all about attitude and again, finding something you feel comfortable in because it suits your personality.
The LION actress put on a busty display in a halter neck dress with a monochrome style. It suited her long, lean shape and the plunging neckline gave her more curves than usual. If you’re tall, a dress with a contrasting colour on the top and bottom half can be really flattering as it gives you more of an hourglass shape. It’s a simple trick but it works, as Nicole showed.
The Arrival actress turned heads from the front and back. From the front, her strapless green maxi dress looked flattering by showing off her athletic arms. But then the real treat came from behind with the dress’s cute bow back detail. Never underestimate the power of a backless dress for a way to get everyone staring at you for ages, wishing they’d thought of that. It had the added benefit of making her bottom look fabulous!
The British actress showed that we know how to make an impact at a big awards ceremony. When she went on stage to present an award, her black maxi dress with top half embellishment and skirt ruffles was literally captivating. She completely upstaged some of the winners in this dress by Alexander McQueen’s creative director Sarah Burton. A bodycon dress with an eye-catching print is a fail-safe way to get noticed – for the colour and the shape!
The TV presenter was interviewing the stars on the red carpet for the BAFTA Backstage show, so she didn’t actually get to go inside but she looked every inch an actual movie star in a white bardot dress. The colour is dazzling and then you notice her lovely tanned shoulders and face and blonde hair and she looks every inch a blonde California girl. Except she’s British and there’s a good chance she’s used self-tan rather than seen any sun. It just goes to show that we can all achieve any look we want – self-tan is a vital accessory on a big night out!
The Spanish actress shimmered in a silver glitter gown. She was almost like a walking disco ball as she sashayed down the red carpet – her reflection went anywhere. Silver and gold are perfect for awards ceremonies and formal dinners as they make an impact for the right reasons. What do you think of Penelope’s dress?
As the hunky Jamie Dornan’s wife, Amelia had to make an effort to claim her man. She’s fighting off his admirers around the world, especially now that he’s in the new 50 Shades Darker film. However, she gave everyone a clear warning that she’s fierce and fabulous so back off, by wearing a striking strapless sequin dress. No wonder Jamie ended up with who he did, she looks pretty but noticeable and that’s not always easy to pull off.
The Game of Thrones star rocked a plunging black and silver long sleeve maxi dress. It’s daring but it made everyone look twice or maybe three or four times. The skirt is long and flowing so she is following the rule of keeping the bottom half covered if she’s showing off her top. The tight waist detail where it contrasts between top and bottom makes her waist look lovely and slim and she enhanced her legs with some killer black heeled sandals. This is a cool way to wear a maxi dress and Sophie looks her age – it’s fresh, not frumpy.
The Duchess of Cambridge
It’s been a while since we’ve seen Kate attend an evening event and she didn’t disappoint in a black floral dress with a bardot neckline. A black floral dress is a safe choice as black is flattering while the flora design makes it more eye-catching. But what’s special about the dress is the bardot neckline as it’s more daring than the royal usually wears. She should do it more often as it really suits her – it allows her to show some skin in a regal way. What do you think?
And whose dress wowed you the most? What would you have worn? You can catch all the action on BBC iPlayer and find out who won what here. Our British actors and actresses did us proud!
